Bonnie
In the parking lot below sat a vintage car, shiny black and chrome and big as a boat, with fins like the Batmobile and a grill like a mouth full of krunk. It had a ragtop with S-bars on the sides, just like a hearse. The rear door handles were in the wrong place, right next to the front handles. I’d never seen such a weird-looking vehicle in my life, but Jesse stared in slack-jawed rapture.
"Holy hell," he breathed.
"What is it?" I asked.
"That," Ritchie said, "is a 'sixty-nine Thunderbird. Clean, runs great. Restored to her original glory, down to the raven black paint. Ain't she the most beautiful piece of machinery you ever saw?"
"I think I just died a little," Jesse said. "But how...?" The color drained from his face. "Please tell me you didn't boost that."
I had the same thought, actually.
Ritchie scowled. "Of course I didn't; she's all mine. Marv called me this morning and told me he picked her up at the police auction and thought of me." His expression softened into a wistful smile. "Pappy loved T-Birds. He always said they were the kind of car God would drive."
"So Marv just gave her to you?" Jesse asked.
"No, he sold her to me. I had a fat stack of cash squirreled away for the future," Ritchie explained. "Been saving up since I started working for Marv. I gave him what he paid and he signed her over to me. So it's all nice and legal, you see." He grinned. "You know, this whole thing kind of feels like, well... destiny." He laughed at his choice of word.
"It's a lucky break, that's for sure," Jesse said. "Pappy must be up there looking out for you."
Ritchie nodded solemnly before shooting a quick glance at the sky. "I think our luck is finally turning around, you guys."
...
"Now all she needs is a name," Jesse said.
"I've been thinking about that," Ritchie replied. "I think I'm gonna call her Bonnie."
"Like Bonnie and Clyde?" I asked.
Jesse shot me a glare telling me to shut up. But Ritchie didn't seem mad at all. Quite the opposite, in fact.
"Yeah," he said with a smirk. "Exactly like that."
