Tiaan has never felt good enough to meet the academic demands expected of a Meditator's Heir, and when his uncles employ a student support aide to assist him with his studies, Tiaan personal feelings of inadequacy and shame, manifest as resentment towards the unfortunate Rubrecht Hoekstra.
infamous droll-teller, Aengus Hopkins, is arrested for the murder.
Despite protocol, Köhnyg Thaddeus insists that Tiaan should shadow his paternal uncle, Gedeon Senyavin, and his clerks, during the court's investigation. Despite his resistance, Tiaan finds himself becoming increasingly grateful for, and reliant on, Rupert's academic assistance and emotional support during this time.
its stories. When Rupert turns into an hysterical wreck, Tiaan resolves to remove him to the safety of Vuurfeld House, only for the pair to be attacked by Vigilants outside the lodging house. As a trained guard, Tiaan manages to save Rupert's life.
At Tiaan's home, Rupert confesses everything. His true name. His heritage. His paternity. It leads to a complete and utter breakdown of trust between him, Tiaan and the Sixth Mediator. It is at this moment that Chazley's survival is revealed, but at a terrible cost: Chazley has just murdered Köhnyg Thaddeus. his law degree, and is a trained Lesser-Mediator in his own right, Rupert is not part of his life. He is consumed by guilt, horrified that he ever allowed himself to consider rejecting Rupert's loyalty and affection simply because of his own, senseless Varsii prejudice. Tiaan instictively knows that he will never be able to return to the timeline where he broke Rupert's heart, but he resolves to find Rupert now, in this life, and prayers he has the strength and courage to make things right.
book, and camps out at the café he knows Rupert often visited. In the end, his plan pays off, even if Tiaan's dignity feels more than a little bruised for it.
Hopkins's ultimate goal is to gradually draw Rupert into the Vigilants’ cause, using his mentorship to frame the group as protectors of an oppressed, dying culture.
As his relationship with Tiaan grows more serious, Rupert begins to worry about the double-life he feels he's living. He tries desperately to prevent Tiaan from finding out about his growing interest in the art of droll-telling, while also trying to keep his romance with Tiaan hidden from his father. Unfortunately, this is exactly the kind secret Hopkins and the Vigilants want to exploit, although the droll-teller does his best to feign disinterest in Rupert's private life.
Book One: Context
At the end of Book One, Köhnyg Thaddeus Rhaelen is reconciled with his exiled nephew, Chazley Dunheuvelin. With his son now expected to become Kronprynz, Chazley's father, Ludwig, finds himself without an heir to succeed him as Sixth Mediator. The only blood candidate is his nephew, Tiaan Senyavin, who is subsequentially forced to leave his position abroad as a personal guard within the Saints-Givensown. Tiaan relishes the idea of becoming the Heir of the Sixth Mediator about as much as his cousin relishes the idea of becoming Kronprynz. That is to say, they'd much rather throw shit at a dragon, brandishing hatpins for swords, and wearing nothing over their bare arses. In leaving the employ of the Saints-Givensown, Tiaan has also just explosively ended his relationship with his ex-employer and lover, Čedomir Ilyuhkin. Tiaan harbours a deep-seated resentment of Varsii immigrants and the subversive, countercultural movement that operates within them, known as the Vigilant. It was due to this fanatical group that his cousin, Chazley, fell foul of the Köhnyg's paranoia in the first place. An arson attack on a pageant wagon during the Köhnyg's Coronation Day Anniversary Celebrations, left the young actor playing Thaddeus hideously burned. The man later died of his wounds. In response, the Vigilants released a damning pamphlet, criticising the Köhnyg and his cultural supression of Varsii immigrants, and damningly signed the document with the name of a ficticious captain: Chas. Dunhilling.Protagonists
Tiaan Senyavin
- Age: Early 20s
- Personality: Tiaan is kind, honourable, self-assured, and observant. He is often mistaken by those outside of his close circle as being quiet or stoically indifferent. Around those he trusts (especially his cousin, Chazley), Tiaan has a lively, playful side that is defined by confidant camaraderie. Tiaan is prone to emotional turbulence, and struggles with his intellectual insecurities. He also has a profound fear of being abandoned.
- Key Traits: Tiaan is intensely loyal to cousin and uncle, even though he often gets frustrated with Chazley's more cavalier attitude to life. He is sensitive to betrayal, which has left him emotionally guarded and cautious about trusting others. Despite this, Tiaan desperately wants a real connection with someone, perhaps even to have his own family. He hates feeling inferior to others, especially when it comes to anything academic, and does not like feeling indebted to others.
- Goals/Motivations: As the abandoned child of a second-son, Tiaan has little interest in titles or gaining political power, although it is a world he feels confidant in navigating. He is guided by a sense of duty to his Dunheuvelin family, and has a keen desire to protect their legacy and reputation. Tiaan wants to return to a life of service as an elite guardsman, either in the employ of one of his uncles, or at Chazley's side.
Rupert Hopkins
- Age: Early 20s
- Personality: Rupert is thoughtful, curious and polite. He is a man with immense patience and deep empathy for those around him, and often finds himself taking on other people's anxieties. Rupert is incredibly inquisitive, possessing a love of history, fiction and folklore.
- Key Traits: Rupert fears rejection, ridicule or violence because of his Varsii background. Despite this, Rupert is also a hopeless romantic. He is very idealistic about relationships, and fantasises about passionate, whirlwind romances, where love can conquer all. In reality, relationships are confusing; men are either taken, intimidating or cads; and love isn't a currency that society commonly deals in.
- Goals/Motivations: Rupert longs for a relationship with real affection and passion. He has already had to abandon his dream of pursuing academia, but enjoyed working as a Student Aide. Rupert has clung to the persona of 'Rubrecht Hoekstra' for so long that he often feels disjointed from his true self. He finds himself locked in a constant battle about being honest about who he is (a Varsii immigrant born in Rykfonteyn), or remaining silent.
Book Two: Outline
Act 1
Tiaan is not adjusting well to his new role as Heir to the Sixth Mediator. He is battling bitter resentment and unwanted heartbreak over leaving his position in the Saints-Givensown, and ending his relationship with Čedomir. He is also struggling with anxiety and imposter syndrome, feeling overwhelmed at the thought of having to become a Mediator in Chazley's place. In the aftermath of a public event, Chazley is attacked in the streets of Rykfonteyn and presumed dead. A body is presented to the Kohnyg and court: mutiliated, burned and dredged from the river, Köhnyg Thaddeus insists that Tiaan identify the body. This act breaks Tiaan, shaking him to his core; in the aftermath, he struggles with nightmares, guilt, grief, and searing anger. With the appearance of mocking letters across the city, the assassination is immediately blamed on the Vigilants, fueling anti-Varsii tensions across the capital. After a particularly irreverent performance, an
Act 2
Tiaan and Rupert shadow the Fourth Mediator when he visits the suspect, Aengus Hopkins, for questioning at Stahlpoort Kehldom. Rupert knows very little about his droll-teller father, other than a surname, and he goes into this investigation terrified that this man might be his father --- or, worse: that his own, Varsii identity might be revealed. Although the Hopkins maintains his innocence, Rupert quickly becomes a focal point of derision and disdain for him. It is clear to Rupert the man recognises him as Varsii, if not his son. Similarly, the droll-teller’s magical rag coat seems to have a strange pull on Rupert, which he desperately tries to ignore. Not long after their first meeting, Rupert starts to receive threatening letters from the Vigilants, calling him a traitor to his Varsii blood, and a claw-sucking sympathiser.Tiaan starts to notice Rupert becoming withdrawn and skittish, but is so consumed by his own grief and guilt, he struggles with how to help him. One day, Rupert dumps a heap of books and lecture notes on Tiaan's desk, and leaves for the night. As Tiaan sorts through the chaos, he finds something that Rupert clearly did not intend to leave behind: a book. A romance book. A curiously... explicit romance book. Returning the item leads to their first, real conversation about interests and personal struggles.
Act 3
As Tiaan's grief makes him more erratic, and Rupert's terror drives him to despair, the pair discover evidence to suggest that Chazley might still be alive, but that his supposed death is part of a larger conspiracy involving Köhnyg Thaddeus. In desperation, Tiaan seeks answers from Čedomir. This leads to a destructive, one-night stand and zero answers. When Rupert arrives the next day, to find Tiaan in the presence of a disheveled Saints-Given, he retreats emotionally, convincing himself that the fledgling bond between them was a figment of his imagination. As Hopkins's trial starts, the Vigilants' start to target Rupert more viciously. The threats start to encompass other people in his life, and Tiaan's own reluctance to read a carefully-crafted letter prevents him from uncovering Rupert's past. The droll-teller's trial ends in a verdict of guilty, and a sentence of execution. Rupert confronts Tiaan about his erratic behaviour, and his lack of belief in his own abilities. Tiaan, realising just how dependent he's grown on Rupert, starts opening up to him emotionally. Tiaan starts to test Rupert's feelings by gently teasing him about romance and his bookish ideals. Their connection deepens as Rupert starts to realise that Tiaan's interest in him is real and sincere. Tiaan even manages to convince Rupert to lend him his favourite romance book.During Hopkins's execution, Rupert convinces himself that he is being pointedly watched by several figures in the crowd. A confrontation outside the gaol leaves Rupert shaken, fearing that the Vigilants plan to move against him. Rupert flees to his lodging house and starts to pack, only to be interupted by his landlady with the news that he has a gentleman caller. Tiaan, taking absolute leave of his senses, wants to comfort him --- but their passionate encounter quickly turns to chaos when the dead droll-teller’s coat magically appears on Rupert’s bed, bidding him to lend an ear to
As a response to the overaching, supernatural plot of the series, the Weave of Time is torn assunder. In the space of a heartbeat, the cousins go from hunted fugitives, to the beloved sons of Kredashmi's monarch. In this new timeline, Thaddeus lost his throne when he failed to murder his sister (a revelation from Book One), making Chazley's mother Köhnagyn in his stead. Tiaan and Chazley find themselves overwhelmed by the myriad of colossal and miniscule changes in their lives, unable to piece together why their world has suddenly changed so profoundly. For Tiaan, the worst realisation is that while he has completed
Book Three: Outline
Act 1
Oblivious to the trauma of his previous timeline, Rupert left his job as Eryk Senyavin's academic aide, and has been awarded the Prince Consort's Scholarship to pursue a Masters degree in Literary Anthropology. Still hiding behind the false identity of Rubrecht Hoekstra, Rupert can't help but feel drawn to the oral tales and traditions of the Varsii, despite his research focus on the morphology of written, Kredasene folklore. When he discovers that Rupert exists and is pursuing his academic dreams, Tiaan is conflicted. On the one hand, he is desperate to see Rupert again, but in this timeline, Rupert is merely a distant acquaintance, with his true identity still a carefully guarded secret. Tiaan plans to try and win back Rupert --- or, at least, woo this version of him --- by doing what his military training taught him: stage an ambush. A ludicrous, insane ambush, with all the features of a 'meet cute' contained in those ridiculous romance novels that his Rupert loved. So Tiaan buys a copy of Rupert's favourite
Act 2
Unbeknownst to Tiaan, Rupert is also being wooed by the Vigilants. Without an assassination to be unjustly framed for, Aengus Hopkins is still very much alive and in pocession of his tatter jacket. Unfortunately, being a creation of myth, history and song, some of the coat's sentient beads remember the broken timeline --- and that Rupert became its master. Intrigued by this strange anomaly, Hopkins tracks down his estranged son, and is enraged to find the boy studying foreign folklore. He presents himself to Rupert as caring kin, a cultural guide, and someone who sees Rupert’s potential as both a scholar and future droll-teller.
Act 3
What the Vigilants want, more than anything else, is retribution. Barely a year earlier, the Kredasene royals had consented to the marriage of their daughter, Tahnaya Luwis, to the new Raskvaerii-Regent in Versarna, Cezary Ekhorin. Although they had no choice in agreeing to this political union, the Varsii view this as proof that the royals are complicit in the destruction of their culture and homeland. Rupert is now faced with a choice: should he protect the man he loves and betray his heritage? Or should he aid the Vigilants in striking at the heart of the royal family, and risk losing Tiaan forever? All The Pages of You is the working title given to Rupert and Tiaan's romantic subplots for World Ember 2024. Their story will be explored in Books Two and Three of The Sorrow of Souls Quartet, which are currently in the planning stages.

Components
Setting
Tiaan and Rupert's storyline is based in the Kredasene capital of Rykfonteyn. In Book Two, the main settings are:- The Universitat of Rykfonteyn: lecturer halls, seminar room, library, etc.
- Vuurfeld House: the Dunheuvelin townhouse (essentially a mansion) within the city. This includes the training yard where Tiaan can lose himself in the familiarity of sword fighting and hand-to-hand combat.
- Chambers of Law: the official offices of the Six Mediators, with the addition of meeting rooms, a library, dining facilities, and accomodation for visiting professionals. Shadowing his uncle, Gedeon Senyavin, in his duties, Tiaan and Rupert will frequently visit the Fourth Mediators' Chambers.
- Stahlpoort Kehldom: the oldest gaol in Rykfonteyn. This is the prison where the Varsii droll teller, Aengus Hopkins, is imprisoned while awaiting his trial/execution.
- Court of Mediators: the court where the droll-teller's trial takes place.
- Rupert's Lodging House
Allies
- Chazley Dunheuvelin: Tiaan's cousin. Built like a bear, drinks like an immortal, and with the temperment of a dragon with a headcold. Generally good natured, witty, and a Perdition-sent plague on everyone in his family.
- Gedeon Senyavin: As Fourth Mediator, Gedeon is Tiaan's paternal uncle. He is very fond of his nephew, and regrets the circumstances that necessitated the boy being raised by his Dunheuvelin kin. He is sympathetic to Tiaan's academic struggles, as his own sons share similar (if less severe) difficulties. Gedeon is a delightful man, and is very irreverent of the position he and his fellow Mediators hold.
- Ludwig Dunheuvelin: The disgraced Sixth Mediator of Kredashmi was Tiaan's guardian during his childhood. He wants his nephew to succeed in life, but would rather that be on Tiaan's own terms rather. He hates that Tiaan and Chazley have had their lives forced for them by a cruel turn of politics.
- Johannes Farr: The confidant and Secretary to the Sixth Judge, Farr is a mentor to Rupert. Ludwig and Farr see Rupert's academic role in Tiaan's life naturally progressing into a professional one, where he will work with Tiaan as a Mediator's Secretary. Farr is frustrated at Rupert's timidity, and wants the lad to find his voice --- he expects Rupert to serve Tiaan with loyalty and discretion, but absolutely take no shit.
- Jacoleyn Frenkes: Rupert's landlady. She would love to see Rupert get his nose out of those silly romance books, and find himself a nice, young man to occupy his time with instead. Or at least, use those dog-eared books to hit that ungrateful mule of a Mediator's heir over the head with, especially when he's behaving like a brat.
Antagonists
- Aengus Hopkins: This droll teller is a known sympathiser and suspected member of the Vigilants. He has an extensive criminal record in Rykfonteyn for thievery, bribery and intimidation. His performances have always boardered on seditious, but after the 'assassination' of the Kohnyg's heir, he public mockery of Chazley's death lead him to be arrested as scapegoat. It is not until later in the book, that Rupert will discover that this man is his biological father.
- Köhnyg Thaddeus: Chazley's maternal uncle. A paranoid monarch who still holds a petty, vengeful grudge against Ludwig for eloping with his sister. As a descendant of the traitor who murdered Saint-Köhnyg Miron at the Battle of Petitioners' Hill, Thaddeus believes Chazley is unfit to inherit the crown after him.
Neutral/Undecided
- Čedomir Ilyuhkin: The Raskvaerii Saints-Given, and Tiaan's ex-lover.
- Tahnaya Luwis (Tahni): Tiaan's cousin (a sister in all but blood) in the second timeline. Tiaan is incredibly close with Tahni, and mourns her loss to the political marriage in Versarna. Rupert helps him write to her, and encourages Tiaan put time and effort into reading her responding letters.
- Lynsey Senyavin: Tiaan's estranged mother who abandoned him to the care of her twin brother, Ludwig, at birth. Tiaan has no real emotional connection to her, and oscillates between wondering if he should seek her approval, letting her remain a cold and distant figure.
Conflict
- The Reluctant Heir: Tiaan does not want to be a Mediator. He thinks himself too stupid, too broken and too useless to even be considered his uncle's heir. Worse still is the fact that this has always been Chazley's dream: to become Mediator in his father's stead. As far as Tiaan is concerned, he will never be able to live up to his cousin's intelligence and competence.
- An Unwanted Secretary/Student Aide: Rupert is highly intelligent, loves learning, and loves to help people. He has thoroughly enjoyed working as a Student Aide for Eryk Senyavin, but Tiaan is not his cousin. Tiaan has no faith in his own abilities, his own judgement, and bullishly rejects any and all attempts to help him manage his learning difficulties.
- A Royal Assassination: Early into Book Two, Tiaan's beloved cousin, Chazley, becomes the victim of an assassination attempt. The Kohnyg launches an uncharacteristically vicious manhunt for his nephew's assassin, leading the Mediators to fear that Thaddeus himself may have been behind the attempt on Chazley's life. Although he is gravely injured in the attack, the decision is made amongst the Mediators that Tiaan (a brother in all but blood to Chazley) must be kept ignorant of his cousin's survival. Tiaan's grief at losing Chazley is believed to be key in convicing the Köhnyg that his nephew has been eradicated, and is no longer a political threat.
- Invasion of Versarna: In the split timeline, Kredashmi's Imperial overlords, the Raskvaerii Empire, have been invited to set up a Regency in Versarna. The King had been killed in battle, and two rival factions had made a bid for the throne: the King's brother, who sought the throne for himself, and the widowed Queen, who wants her infant daughter to inherit her father's throne. The Queen invites the Raskvaerii to send a Regent to rule until her daughter comes of age, giving the Empire a coveted foothold in the hostile country. The main plot of Book 3 focuses on Tiaan's sister being forced to wed the Raskvaerii Regent as an act of solidarity, and to provide a son that the infant Queen can, eventually, wed.

dude, love this. I really like your world it has such interesting characters. I am a bit confused about the politics, I thought Kredashmi was under the control of the Raskvaeric empire (I thought I read that somewhere in all this lore lol) but I seem to be mistaken. I hope to see you continue to flesh out this world and its stories, I am particularly interested in the politics.
Hi - thank you so much for the comment! Yes, Kredashmi is technically a territory of the Raskvaerii Empire, but it has its own monarchy.
that's what I thought but I guess I just got turned around lol. I hope you elaborate more on the Raskvaerii empire more in the future and on its relationships with the Kredashmi (I imagine it to be a situation like the relationship between Korea and the Qing dynasty, wikipedia has a good article about that invasion which ended with korea becoming a tributary state while still having its own government). I also hope you someday do a map, that would be really cool to see especially if the empire is huge and then Kredashmi is small in comparison. Anywho, ignore my rambling I've sort of been lurking and watching this world for a while lol.
