Contested Soul

You did not ask for power. It took you.
Somewhere in your ancestry, or in a moment of survival and suffering, a fragment of a fiend, a devil's curse, a demon’s blood, or a stolen ember from the Lower Planes, took root in your soul. Whether you were born marked or altered by choice or accident, your body and magic are not your own. The source struggles within you, maddening, seductive, terrifying, and in mastering it, you reshape yourself into a creature of fire, dread, and devastating will.

(1st Level)

Infernal Legacy

You gain resistance to fire damage.
When you successfully cast a spell that deals fire or necrotic damage, or that forces a creature to make a Wisdom saving throw (e.g., charm or fear), you can move 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.

Elemental Bond

Your connection to the Lower Planes grants the following:

  • Enhanced Thaumaturgy: When you cast thaumaturgy, you can activate two effects simultaneously, and you may end one as a bonus action.
  • Infernal Speech: You know Infernal and can communicate simple ideas to fiends, lesser devils, or infernal spirits, as determined by the DM.
  • Darkvision: You can see in dim light within 60 ft as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

1st Level

Hex, Cause Fear, Hellish Rebuke

First Transformation

Small horns appear on your brow. Your skin takes on red, ash-gray, or sooty undertones, and your eyes glow faintly in low light. You feel heat under your skin and the faint whisper of an alien will.

(5th Level)

Infernal Influence

You can draw upon the fiend within to cast a potent spell without a casting roll. Choose one of the following:

  • Hex, Cause Fear, Suggestion, or Crown of Madness
    You may cast that spell once per long rest without requiring a casting check. You may cast it again using Source Well dice.

Fireball, Fear, Counterspell

Second Transformation

Your horns twist or lengthen, your voice deepens, and your skin radiates faint warmth. Charisma-based checks involving intimidation or dominance gain a menacing edge.

(10 Level)

Hellborn Mantle

When you cast a spell of 1st level or higher, you may wreathe yourself in infernal energy for 1 minute:

  • Enemies within 10 feet have disadvantage on saving throws against your spells that frighten or charm.
  • If a creature hits you with a melee attack, it takes fire damage equal to your Charisma modifier.

You may use this feature once per long rest, or again by spending 5 Source Well dice.

4th Level

Third Transformation

A barbed tail unfurls. Smoke curls from your skin when angered, and your teeth sharpen slightly into subtle fangs. You are visibly more fiend than mortal.

(15 Level)

Wings of the Pit

Once per long rest, you can manifest infernal wings, gaining a flying speed equal to your walking speed for 10 minutes.
You may also cast fear or synaptic static once during this time without a casting check. You regain this feature after a long rest

Capstone Transformation

Your body has become a vessel of the Lower Planes. Your horns grow grand and curling, your eyes burn like coals, your wings may flicker with shadow, and your voice echoes with unseen heat.
You radiate faint sulfurous scent and leave warmth in your wake. Mortals instinctively fear or revere your presence.

Contested Soul Surge Table

When a Source Surge occurs, roll a d12 on this table:

1Hellfire Lash: One creature within 10 ft takes fire damage equal to your proficiency bonus.
2Infernal Rebuke: The next creature that hits you takes 1d6 fire damage per spell level.
3Sulfurous Fog: A 10-ft radius smoke cloud lightly obscures the area for 1 minute.
4Eyes of the Pit: You gain 60-ft darkvision or extend existing by 30 ft for 10 minutes.
5Voice of the Damned: You have advantage on your next Charisma (Intimidation or Persuasion) check.
6Scorching Aura: Nearby enemies take fire damage equal to your Charisma modifier.
7Infernal Glare: One creature you can see must make a Wisdom save or become frightened until its next turn ends.
8Shadow Step: Teleport up to 10 ft in shadow or smoke.
9Fiendish Luck: Gain advantage on your next saving throw within the next minute.
10Seeping Hex: Your next attack deals +1 necrotic damage per spell level.
11Ember Field: The ground in a 10-ft radius ignites in embers. Enemies that start their turn there take 1 fire damage (1 round).
12Wings of Shadow: Spectral wings lift you for 1 round, allowing you to hover.
