Nevermore
Horace D. Thatcher, better known by his nickname, Nevermore, was a seentriaese pirate who operated in the Outer and Inner oceans, evading the seentriaese authorities under the command of Edgarius Corbin, the Collector, during the Sea Emperors' period. While little is known about his early life, it is assumed he was a sailor working for the seentriaese crown before Edgarius' rule and the impositions and taxes that came with it. He supposedly got unemployed and was forced to become a pirate to survive, a "profession" he proved to be very good at.
Horace started out in a crew of upstarters under Edvard Caspien's command. The man was ruthless and violent, but he was able to get the job done, for a while. Nevermore despised his unnecessary violence and tendency to get drunk, thinking this would be the death of him. Caspien eventually recognized Thatcher's proficiency and put him in command of a ship he had captured, just in time for Nevermore to see Caspien be ambushed by a ship of the seentriaese navy after capturing a ship containing a large amount of treasure. As expected after such a victory, Caspien got drunk, and was unable to fend the marines.
Thatcher narrowly managed to escape the ambush with two of Caspien's original fleet of eight, fleeing to Vetian Bay in Enduuriah to regroup. From there, he began to command his own fleet and organize his attacks, earning himself a reputation as a fearsome and powerful pirate. Despite this, he was still against violence, and preferred to use his reputation and people's fear of him to achieve his goals, which gave him very positive results. He used his knowledge of the currents that existed in the Inner and Outer Oceans to gain an advantage, and eluded the Seentriaese navy on several occasions.
In 375 AR, Craftford Island, Nevermore met Darhanny Van Moore, then fifteen, and allowed her to board his ship. The one who would later become Ginger Beard learned a lot from Nevermore before they parted ways. At an unknown point, Nevermore was the first to establish the Denisoveese Safe Routes, discovering the faraway archipelago and allowing commerce to commence. After a very close encounter with death during a seentriaese ambush, Horace hung his cutlass and pistol and faked his own death, going on to live relatively well as a lavish writer and philosopher, making use of the riches he had acquired over the years.
