The Mage Guild

Guild Information

Goal: Share knowledge and make discoveries while using magic responsibly

Organization Alignment: Chaotic Good

Leader: Archmagus Chairon

Headquarters: The Archseptor Tower in Minton

Guild Locations: There is a Mage Academy in every major city, and The Library in Bridgewater , the Collective at The Three Waters Inn in Three Waters , along with smaller enclaves through the region. There is also the Grey Wizard’s Tower in Darkhall , but it is not used as enclave, rather it is run by a hermit Master Magus who will entertain other guild members from time to time.

Recruitment: Either volunteer or be recruited to be trained, or have natural magical aptitude. Having magical aptitude is not a requirement of the guide, as there are many scholars of the arts who never cast a single spell.

Gaining Prestige/Rank Actions: Making discoveries, finding new and unknown magic items, and sharing spells with fellow members. Passing rank tests at a Mage Academy can also raise your rank up until Mage.

Dues: None, however, every wizard/magical practitioner is expected to be at least known to the guild, if not registered with a specific school. This connection to the guild provides connections to regeants and spells in the Guild Repository, which can range from being free of cost to having a signficant discount compared to purchasing it at market value.

Motto:

"Magiam Domina Noli ab ea Dominari Magia est Instrumentum Instrumenta Non Curant Cui Noceant Tu es artifex et instrumentum sapienter tractare debes" meaning Master the Magic Do not Be Mastered By it Magic is a Tool Tools Do not Care who They Harm you are the craftsman and must wield the tool wisely.

History

The Mage Guild existed long before Minton was ever a town, when the Gorgonwood was still a wild and untamed thing. The Archseptor Tower was built for the Archmagus as a refuge from the civilized world in more northern Alorna. Eventually, civilization found the Gorgonwood; villages and cities sprang up in the region, and around the base of the tower grew the port town of Minton. This change did not come without growing pains, as the tower and its inhabitants stood through two major wars, several disasters, and kingdoms rising and falling. Through all this, the Mage Guild has held fast it tenets of persuing knowledge while using magic responsibly, exemplified by the leadership of Archmagus Charion. He is an older sun elf, though no one knows exactly how old he is, only that he has always been the head of the Mage Guild.

Under his guidance, the Mage Guild took a stand against the tyrant king, albeit in less of a military aspect than the Stewards. They aided the Stewards with supplies, but their main focus was protecting and preserving the populace caught in the crossfire. This is where the rumor that the tower is actually it’s own city, and that it is bigger than the walls should contain. There has never been any evidence of this, but the tower did house a remarkable amount of people during the war.

After the war, the guild put magic to work helping to rebuild what could be safely done by the Mages offering their expertise. The Union and the Mage Guild worked together closely to return Gorgonwood to inhabitable for the residents. After this, many of the artisans showed an interest in the arcane arts and they were welcomed to study, even if they had no magical inclination or innate ability. The Academy in Minton is open to all who wish to learn, as it was founded a collaboration between the Union and the Mage Guild. It at first was workhouses for the artisans, but grew over time, the campus taking over a district of old Minton and coming to serve as the quarters of the eight Magisters responsible for teaching the eight schools of magic.

Sharing of magical discoveries is another pillar of the guild, and this is done through open communication between the different sects of the school and with the smaller enclaves and libraries beyond Minton’s walls. The Mage Guild communicates with all of it’s enclaves via enchanted ledgers that convey news amongst the community.
