Formation of the Otorinese Republic

The most recent nation to form on the continent of Solesia is the Otorinese Republic or the Otorin Republic. While the republic itself wasn’t officially formed until roughly fifty years ago the groundwork for such an alliance was laid over a century ago during the last great demon war.

After the second portal was opened in western Solesia many of the kingdoms who had previously been safe from the demonic hordes became vulnerable and feared for their safety. It was King Balteus Hrealthgar of Otorin who first proposed a military and commercial alliance to strengthen the surrounding kingdoms. Otorin had been lucky with a vast wealth that had preceded the demonic invasion and concerned about his kingdom King Balteus knew his nation could not stand on their own.

It is thanks to the decades of cooperation and comradery that many of the old kingdoms in western Solesia were able to reform or remain after the war ended. This alliance would officially end only a couple years after the war as many of the nations felt their recourses should be focused inward on rebuilding and not be sent to other nations.

This however did not hamper trade as many of the merchant guilds and even the mage circles had become accustomed to working with their neighbors. It is also believed that since the largest amount of fighting happened in central and eastern Solesia the west was spared where the others were not.

This now unofficial alliance would remain such until the reign of Emperor Tiberius Altesia Leothen and his massive expansion. Fearing the threat of invasion again many of the kingdoms would begin talks to reform the alliance. It wasn’t till the fall of Halifaux and Illia that it was realized they would need more than an alliance.

The most powerful and influential lords voted to merge into a singular nation, one where the individual kingdoms could be maintained by their lords but where an elected council would govern and manage the bonds and powers of these kingdoms. They would name it the Otorinese Republic in honor of the original alliance that made such a feat possible. It was also at this time where the mages circles had come to accept that magic alone would not fend off the empire, they needed magiteck.

Magiteck would take a different shape than that in the east as many of the kingdoms did not wish to fully industrialize and thus the use of focus crystals began to spread. From heating fields in the cold north to supplying water in the more arid lands these focus crystals relied and pulling magic aether from various sources and modifying it to the users needs. These would require mages to operate instead of engineers like the Leothen.

As of today nearly fifty years years after its founding the Otorinese Republic is one of the most powerful nations in Solesia. Its economy and military rival that of the Leothen Empire and stand as a refuge for those fleeing from its expansion. Though it is not free of its own forms of corruption and faults the Republic is generally looked upon with a positive note by the other kingdoms.
