The Shattered March

The Shattered March stands as one of the most defining moments in the history of the Aes Unguis Caliphate. It is both a testament to the Caliphate’s power and a grim warning to those who underestimate the Sahirah’s reach. This conflict erupted following a diplomatic collapse with the Sovereignty of Arktalas, a magocratic state seeking dominion over Ayinel’s Ley Lines.

The Prelude

Following the Cascade, the temporal upheaval that destabilized ancient boundaries, Arktalas sought to assert control over regions newly exposed to its influence. Their emissaries delivered a Missive of Accord to the Caliphate, demanding submission under the guise of cooperation. When the Caliphate refused to answer, Arktalas viewed the silence as defiance.   The Sovereignty mobilized a fleet of arcane battalions, including floating war fortresses and ley-powered constructs, expecting an easy victory. However, they grossly underestimated the Sahirah and her Veilforged.

The Battle

  • The Ambush at Misted Peaks

The Veilforged, utilizing their unmatched stealth and the natural mists of The Veiled Valley, struck Arktalas’ vanguard with precision. Entire units disappeared into the fog, their cries swallowed by the shadows. Survivors described spectral figures moving through the mist, as if the Veil itself had come alive.
  •
  • The Sahirah’s Intervention

At the height of the battle, the Sahirah revealed the full extent of her power. Standing at the Veilstone Monolith, she unleashed a wave of energy that disrupted Arktalas’ ley-powered war machines. Witnesses claimed the constructs froze mid-air, their magic stripped away as if consumed by the Veil.
  •
  • The Sundering of the Sky Bastion

The final blow came when the Sky Bastion of Solunthar, one of Arktalas’ largest floating fortress, was torn asunder. Those present described the Sahirah invoking a massive rift in the Veil, which reached out like shadowed tendrils to engulf the fortress. The wreckage fell into the Chasm of Shards, sealing Arktalas’ defeat.

The Aftermath

  • Arktalas’ Retreat

The Sovereignty retreated, its forces shattered and its ambitions in ruins. This marked the first major loss for Arktalas in over a century, cementing the Caliphate’s reputation as a force to be reckoned with.
  •
  • Strengthening the League

The Caliphate’s swift and decisive action resonated within The League of Free Cities, prompting stronger collective defense agreements. Yet, it also heightened tensions with those who feared the Sahirah’s growing influence.
  •
  • Lingering Resentments

In Arktalas, the Shattered March remains a bitter wound. Some factions within the Sovereignty push for revenge, while others warn against underestimating the Sahirah again. Rumors persist that Arktalas is experimenting with new ley technologies designed to bypass the Caliphate’s defenses.

Legacy of the Shattered March

For the Caliphate, the Shattered March solidified the Sahirah’s divine status. Her ability to repel such a powerful force with minimal assistance from the League became a central part of her mythos, reinforcing her role as protector of the Veil and its prophecy.   Among the League of Free Cities, the event remains a topic of both reverence and fear. To the faithful of the Caliphate, it is proof that the Sahirah is guided by the prophecy, preparing Ayinel for the Wanderer’s return. To skeptics, it is a stark reminder of the Caliphate’s untouchable power and its willingness to wield it in defense of its secrets.
