Eridanus battle

The Eridanus battle is the name given to a border skirmish fought between the Empire of Earth and the The Zeyorian Republic.   The battle itself started when the Zeyorian fleet arrived in the system, jumping almost on top of the Empire's ships. The two destroyers, the EES Osprey and EES Kestrel, were destroyed almost at once. The Zeyorian never sent out a warning or any radio message. EES Falcon managed to get a volley of missiles away, targeting the Zeyorian cruiser before EES Falcon itself was destroyed. Seeing that its allies were getting picked off without any chance of changing the outcome, EES Gepard fired up its engines and began prepping its FTL drive for emergency jump but before it jumped, it fired a large volly of missiles toward the enemy cruiser, with at least three confirmed hits in and around its bridge area.   Following the battle, tensions between the Empire and the Republic escalated, and skirmishes broke out in multiple locations. Some skirmishes were minor, involving only two ships exchanging warning shots, while others developed into full-scale battles, with both sides deploying reinforcements.   The raised tensions lasted for a few weeks, and on the side of the Empire, they led to the creation of the Eridanus doctrin were should a borderpatrol of the Empire be attacked, its the duty of the sector commander to respond in overwhelming force against the attackers and should only be allowed to cease the retalitory attacks once an equal number of enemy ships or other installations have been destroyed or seized.   All destroyed destroyers from the Eridanus battle would later have their names reintroduced into the navy when a new batch of destroyers were construced, the three new destroyers inherited the battlestar given to the original three posthumously following the deescalation of the tensions.
