Hospitants

Welcome to Solaris, traveller! This is a slower-than-light science fantasy set in our own solar system.
About Solaris | Guide to Solaris | Prologue
The Hospitants are an interplanetary charity organization based in a fleet of spacecraft. They travel throughout the Sol System to meet the need where it is at. The hospitants arrive as a small squadron of spacecraft. The largest is a carrier and functions as a mobile hospital. The smaller craft are mostly suborbital emergency vehicles, capable of entering and exiting atmosphere. They also have one ship that can land and function as a temporary hospital.   The Hospitants are inspired by the historical Migrari, a nomadic group of spacefarers that existed in the early spacefaring age. The Migrari provided medical assistance, training, and techological boons to the societies they made contact with. In honor of the legacy of the Migrari, the Hospitants also invest in local artisans in the areas they operate, and resell their products to help fund the organization. This practice has come under criticism for underpaying the artisans.   The re-opened oortite mines in Kuiper Belt has led to an increase of illness and armed conflicts. The Hospitants have several active operations in the belt, treating survivors of armed violence, oortic poisoning, and outbreaks of epidemics after the compromise and pollution of local water and food sources.   A specialized squadron in the Asteroid Belt treats severe injuries that cannot be handled on site. They provide food and water to colonies when the spotty supply convoys fail to arrive, and help abandoned workers migrate out of the belt.   The Hospitants are also active on several moons.

A busy bunch and it sounds like perhaps despite the shady allegations they are in fact a net good. One of the great difficulties of morality, where do we draw the lines. I also like the reference the idea of that historical tie, thats very on the nose a lot of such charitable efforts oft are basically references to previous efforts that for one reason or another stopped.

At least they aren't just paying the artists in exposure, I guess.   I do like the fact they are a mobile force for healing, and can even deploy a hospital on the ground. Great for disasters.
