Welcome to Solaris, traveller! This is a slower-than-light science fantasy set in our own solar system.

Deep Space is, presumably, a vast void with little but interplanetary medium. More specifically, deep space are the massive pockets of space above and below the orbital plane. The sun is travelling through the galaxy, taking the planets with it. The sun still protects the system with the heliosphere. The heliosphere is a sphere of influence dominated by solar winds. These winds are powerful enough to block out interstellar influence and shield the Sol System from cosmic radiation.
The heliosphere ends around 60-70 AU from the sun, which is outside of the Kuiper Belt, but before the Oort Cloud. The space above the orbital plane is known as upstream space, and the space below is downstream.Upstream space is better understood than downstream. It is shaped like a dome, albeit varying in size and shape with the fluctuations of the Sun.
Solar winds follow currents, determined by the current magnetic direction of the sun. These solar currents ripple out like the petals of a rose. They probably pick up with the Solar Pulses.
The risk of Deep Space Syndrome is already high in orbital space, and most people believe it would only be worse further out.
Deep Space Leviathans spend most of their lives in deep space. Every couple centuries the astraceteans cross the ecliptic plane to migrate to downstream deep space. Since deep space is considered too dangerous and remote to visit, most of the knowledge about deep space has been gleaned from findings from the deep space leviathans.
Fritz Fram's last expedition took him out to Deep Space. He has been presumed dead, because he should be back by now.
