The Veilani

Some would say that the Veilani are a people without a home. The Veilani I have met would argue that their home is where they make it.

Structure

Every collection of the Veilani has a matriarch, which in turn, is beholden to the legendary Grandma Rags, or so they say.   When the matriarch passes away, the title passes to her closest female relative. Usually a daughter, but any relation is acceptable in a pinch.

Assets

To say the Veilani have assets would be...not inaccurate, but nebulous. To get a census of the Veilani is a neigh on impossible task, let alone trying to inventory any sort of equipment or assets they might have.   All that can be said is that the Veilani protect themselves, and anyone that has attempted to stomp them out have regretted it quickly.   In general terms, there are over 300 known Veilani groups traveling around the known world. This number is considered inaccurate, however, as the convoys can be hard to differentiate. Each one has it's own self contained force of fighters, arcane talents, and the divinely gifted.

History

The Veilani are not one people, but a collection of drifters, outcasts, and the unwanted. Where they got their start, no one can say, though many scholars have come to the conclusion that there is no 'start' but a psychological phenomenon   As society has modernized, the Veilani have only grown, people of every species joining their convoys and caravans. Making their way across the world by performing and hiring out their fighters for mercenary work and monster hunting. Of course, they are often pushed out by the people who hired them when the job is done. The money they make buys them food, weapons (for protection of course), and a means to expand their caravans and convoys.   There is a great deal of mysticism surrounding the Veilani as well, with many people fearing that curses will follow any that insults the Veilani but at the same time feeling that the Veilani are a people of scheisters and criminals. Which...is not entirely unfounded. You could never prove it, however. Seriously, don't try it. You won't get far.   In any case, while their fighters are low in numbers, they make up for it in dedication to protect their home, and more importantly, raw skill. Many Veilani caravans have several families that have dedicated themselves and their lineage to the martial arts to protect their homes. It is also a common practice for such families to take local mercenary work to help fund the caravan, while also giving them hard-fought experience. They, intelligently, rarely pick a fight with the people that live around them. Choosing to leave if they ever upset the people of the town they have most recently made their home instead of taking a stand. To that end, they ere more towards the work of monster slayers, so they don't make any more enemies.

Military

The Trainband: The elites, rank and file, new recruits, levy, and martial legends all rolled into one. The Trainband is the term given to the standing force of fighters of a Veilani caravan, under normal circumstances, consisting of several families who have filled the office for generations. In dire straights, they can conscript other families of the caravans to fight, though those instances are few and far between.
