Crown of the Eldest

It was suspended between a stalactite and a stalagmite, floating between the two pillars - which was impossible, and yet it was happening. A faint gold streak of light swirled around it, and as he watched, the silver metal that made up the base of the crown twisted and looped and stretched, fluxing between a large loop and small ring. Strange symbols were etched into the metal. There were gems there, too - glittering rubies, and shimmering sapphires, sparkling emeralds. He stood, transfixed, by the relic.   "Stormbreak!" came a shout. "What are you doing here?" In an instant the crown faded away like dust in the wind.

History

The Crown of the Eldest is an ancient relic once used to divine the rulers of the Sky Kingdoms. After four decades of heavy abuse and mistreatment by the rulers of the Kingdoms, there was a revolution in which they were overthrown. A system of checks was created to balance the power of the new rulers, but who was there to rule? Several of the wisest and most skilled and powerful craftspersons joined together to forge a magical crown that, once placed upon the head of either dragon or human, would see their worthiness and capability to lead. This was used to elect fifty new kings, representatives, and heads of noble houses - and although these seemed like kingly titles, there were systems in place to ensure that these kingdoms would remain free and fair.

Significance

After its use following the Glorious Revolutions, the Crown remained relatively unused, hidden away in some Elder's basement until it was needed again - which was almost never. (The Crown really made its work easy for itself.) However, following the Ashes War, its powers were used for the final time to choose a new dragon king for the now-unified dragons. No one knows where it is now. Most speculate that it is hidden away past the Crystal Pass, and takes on a new form for each coronation of the new dragon ruler. This is neither confirmed nor denied by the royal family. Thus, many historians have labeled it as a lost relic of the sky's bygone days - and hope to finally find it.
