History of the Greywatch

The Greywatch is a special branch of the military of the duchy, originally founded as police service before the war however it morphed into a much more sinister organization. It is now the secret police of the Duchies and acts outside the normal chains of command.

    Founding

The Greywatch was founded by Torolt Greybank to supplement the strained police force of the Duchy. The Greywatch is not part of the police of Greybank it is instead a branch of the military and such is ordered by military ranks and regulations. It was started with volunteers from anywhere but most came from the city itself and saw it as a way of completing national service without being sent too far from home.

    Glensville riots/ Glensville Massacre
    Military action

Glensville is a large town on the outskirts of Greybank control where its main income is through individual farmers owning their land and farming it for themselves then selling the produce. The incidents started when Torolt Greybank ordered all land would be bought from the farmers for a "fair" price and they would then be paid to work the land, but all the produce would be go to the state to sell on.  The initial conflict came when a large group of farmers gathered to raid a shipment of goods heading to the city with the intend to redistribute it to the people who had grown it. The Greywatch troops who were guarding the shipment were unarmed and were injured in the attack, more so than was necessary as the townsmen resented them as a show of the Greybanks control over them.  Torolt Greybank was slow to act and did not order anything for weeks and caravans continued to be raided by the farmers and the Greywach soldiers injured in the process. The next escalation was came form the Greywatch, Maj Carlton who commanded the troops stationed in Glensville realised that as they were a military unit and not a police one they were not restrained by the same rules, because of this he armed his troops with military style swords and pikes and instructed them that if under attack they had the right to treat them as an enemy of the state.  Two days later a caravan was attacked by a large group of farmers, however unknown to them the wagons did not contain their food but instead were full of Greywatch troops. When the farmers approached the wagons the troops sprang out and began attacking the farmers, spurred on by the success of the attack and the want for revenge after weeks of beatings and attacks the Greywach continued the attack until all the farmers were either dead or had fled.  After the first engagement the farmers increased their weapons and a number of people were killed in each raid, eventually the people of Glensville decided to attack the Greywatch directly, this ended badly and most of the attackers were killed. The Greywatch wanted revenge for the attack and hunted the few survivors down and in the chaos many buildings were set ablaze, many civilians were killed in the inferno that roared though the town. The Greywatch blame the burning on the townspeople rioting and claim they did everything they could to prevent it, however some people who survived swear that the Maj was ordering his men to burn the town and stop people leaving.

    Return to Greybank
    Civil action

After the Glensville riots the public sentiment in the land surrounding Greybank was very negative so Torolt withdrew all the Greywatch back to the city and replaced them with police drawn more from the towns. This meant that the Greywatch were the main force in the city itself.

Pre Unification - AC 422

422 442

Pre unification the Greywatch was an ordinary police force designed to strengthen the garrisons and overworked forces in the regular police. In this era recruits were mainly from Greybank itself and this caused some issues when they were sent to police further afield, this led to the Greywatch only policing the capital of Greybank.
