Elf

The elvish race once began as humans. During the time of the war of the gods the god Caurus was killed and the manner of their death shattered them into thousands of tiny shards, these shards fell to the ground around the location of the great forest. When the shards hit a person they changed them, they became taller, stronger, quicker and longer lived. The longer the shards remained in the person the more like Caurus they became, this also granted them a stronger affinity for potential. The people who took the shards would go on to become the elves, the power of the shards is passed down the female side of the family. When a elves child is born they do not possess a shard of Caurus to do not gain the full powers it grants and are referred to as in awakened, if the child grown up without gaining a shard then they will look much like a slightly large human and will not be able to pass on the elves blood.
Because to become a full elf requires a shard they must wait for one to die for there to be a free shard. This severely limits the population of the elves, although at one point there was a lot more shards, this is part of the reason they try to avoid outer conflicts as any who did could make a foreign Half elf and deny one of theirs. The nature of this means that normally they will wait for someone to die for them to have a child, as there can only be one child per shard the king picks the parents to try to have the most successful offspring in a system of eugenics. The shards of the pervious elf are sacred as they are part of their god. The child who receives the shard will be taught the history of their shard and what its previous owners were like. The elves believe that the shard carries some aspect of the personality of the god, so when a famous warrior dies they will pick two warriors to have a child to align with the shard. As the elves can live anywhere up to 250 years there are very few children around, so each child is raised by their village, although they do know who their parents are there is no encouragement for any bond between them, although some do form more attachment.
