Battle of Varna

Confederate:
Their army numbered roughly 10,000 almost half the men in the fourth army, mainly light infantry from the provinces surrounding Nawe, they had roughly 1000 cavalry that were deployed on the flanks. It is important to note that the fourth army is not the army that took Varna but was just stationed there to hold it and so they had very little actual combat experience, they were also drawn from conscripts and not very well equipped.   Norport:   The forces led by Mahler numbered only 4,000 and contained very little to no combat cavalry. It did however have 3,000 heavy infantry, equipped with the best that the duchy could supply. They were also experienced troops, although they had lost Varna they year prior they had fought extensively.

The Conflict

Prelude

The confederates have taken a foothold in the area controlled by Norport, here they have constructed a fortress to survive the harsh weather of the area. Lord Konrad has decided to retake the fortress of Varna and has assembled a fleet to carry his troops to the fort, this will strand a large portion of the confederate army in the area without supplies and surrounded. When the troops have landed they must march for two days straight to allow them to maintain the element of surprise, unfortunately the confederation generals got wind of the landing, however they believed that Konrad would progress more slowly to his goal and such they did not construct adequate fortifications.

Deployment

The confederate 4th army deployed in hastily made defensive trenches, not particularly deep due to the frozen ground. Most of their infantry in the center with cavalry on the wings in a typical fashion. The commander of the 4th army had actually left the fort believing that Lord Mahler would take longer to arrive, this left an inexperienced officer to place his headquarters very close to the front line.
The forces of Norport deployed in a similar fashion with mainly infantry in the centre, however knowing that they lacked the advantage in range weaponry formed into two columns to punch through the enemies lines.

Conditions

The conditions play a major role in the victory for Norport, Konrad decided to attack in the middle of winter knowing that his troops would have the advantage over the southern troops. Although they were much more unprepared that he thought, they were lacking in the most basic of cold weather gear and many of their bows and crossbows did not function in the cold weather. During the day of the battle a large blizzard started as the armies were forming up, this blizzard was so strong that it blinded both sides and made most archers useless.

The Engagement

With the blizzard arrival Konrad decided to still push the attack,he gave the order to wait until the wind changed to be against the confederate trench line then fire 2 volleys and to charge in 2 columns. From a confederate perspective the battle would have likely been put off and most of the officers thought the same and were preparing for the night. Then the blizzard blinds them and arrows start raining down, although mostly ineffective they did help to scare the confederate troops, then the columns of screaming men appeared out of the blizzard like evil spirits. The light infantry held their own against the charge for a short period of time before routing. As the rest of the line could not see what was happening the rout quickly spread to the rest of the defence although many never fought or saw an enemy. This Was compounded by a lack of orders as the command tent was quickly overrun because it was very close to the lines and from then could not direct the battle or instruct the troops to hold steady.

The cavalry and ranged advantage of the confederation were mainly nullified by the blizzard, allowing the strength of the much more experienced Norport troops to win. During the flight many of the confederate troops were cut down, however Norport troops could not fully destroy the army because of the weather and the fatigue from the forced march in the last 2 days
