The Niblet War
"What the hell is that?"
"Don't ask questions! Kill it!"
often described as the largest conflict in the history of the Necropolis, the Niblet War was a short battle that was not supposed to happen. When hearing about it, most outsiders ridiculed the whole thing, taking it as a joke. The people who were there, however, remembered it vividly with horror until they died. And it all started with a magical mishap.
The Conflict
Prelude
It was all based on an accident.
In one of the magic labs in the Necropolis a student was doing experiments. As he tried to make some small creatures to help him do minor tasks he did a small miscalculation somewhere. What he accomplished instead of what he was trying to do was forever recorded in history.
He did succeed in making small creatures. These creatures were capable to do small tasks. They just weren't as good-natured nor obedient as their creator had planned. There were also more than a thousand times more than planned of them.
The Engagement
The rest of the people on campus soon noticed scores of these tiny creatures that suddenly waved through the campus, attacking everyone they caught up with. Everything was chaos and panic. Several people were killed before anyone had time to organize a defense.
After becoming aware of the threat the faculty quickly assembled. There was no time to organize anything complex. The creatures needed to be blasted to pieces, and quickly. They grouped themselves into units and moved out.
Luckily, the creatures were quite frail and not very bright, but they were many and quick. It took days until the faculty had control over the situation. By then many had died, both faculty members and students.
Outcome
The first thing that happened after the battle was to administer first aid to the wounded and register the fallen.
The families of the students were enraged that something like this could happen in an educational organization, and demanded a risk assessment of the whole campus. The Lenthiri branch of the Academy of the Arcane also uttered some worry about the safety of the Necropolis campus. Obrivas himself had to remind everyone about the inherent risk of Necromantic magic, and that both students and faculty had signed official statements about being aware of the danger, yet he reluctantly organized a risk assessment team to look at places where the risk could be lowered. The campus in Death's Table was closed for three months as this assessment happened.
The creatures were called Niblets after the way they attacked by biting and tearing.
Aftermath
The event brought some changes to the Necropolis after the risk assessment. The labs were closed off for new students until they'd done a safety course, and the Niblet War was used as an example of what not to do in several subjects.
There was a period after the War where there were fewer students wanting to enroll at the Necropolis, but about a decade later the numbers were back to normal.
