Daleitai (dah-lay-tie)

Butsutogijo

The daleitai (or butsutogijo) is either an official or unofficial tournament for martial artists. These tournaments are held on the Leitai, "fighting stage," which is constructed in a public square. In the case of official tournaments, these are often formal challenges between a pair of fighters or several fighters. Official fights tend to have formal judges and a referee standing by to make sure any agreed-upon rules are being followed. The loser is the fighter who is knocked, or forced, off of the platform to the ground below.
In the case of unofficial fights, the challenger to an area will often construct their own leitai and then simply stand upon it and challenge any fighters in the surrounding area to take the platform from him. Though the same conditions for winning apply, unofficial fights are brutal and often end in permanent wounds or the deaths of the fighters.
