A father's last wish
The eggs are safe.
That's always what it matters most.
We smelled trouble last full moon. The raptor kind.
Our bloodline has seen brighter days. The Great Spill wiped most of our lineages. The few of us that survived have been keeping our heads down
to escape the heavy predation going on lately...
It is a hard life... One lived at constant full speed. We are born often and in great numbers, but most die young and for frivolous reasons. There is starvation, disease... Getting crushed in a burrow... Washed away in a flood... Drowned inside the burrow during a thunderstorm...
The most grim of outcomes is when they snatch you from inside your burrow. Some insects and smaller sheldosaurs can do that... It can happen when you least expect it, like when sleeping...
I know, it's terrifying. But our life is terrifying. Fear is part of our routine.
For those of us that make it all the way to the first parenting it already feels like a life accomplished. It might well happen half-way in a full lifetime, but then again, how many of us actually get to that point?
I am one of those that made it to the half-way point and some. I've seen enough death to cherish the few prizes we earned...
I can consider my life a success. As long as at least one chick makes it to where I am now, it is indeed a success. And if the chain isn't broken our lineage will live on.
Even though death is always breathing on our necks, we must accept the fragility of life and focus on the here and now
. As a parent, I must worry about my offspring and their future. They're just eggs now and my darling is keeping them warm while I FORAGE for berries and mushrooms.
We are humble creatures - we don't aspire to greatness. The greatest achievement would be living long enough to become the elder .
It's too late for wishing. My time seems to have come, as I scan beyond my shoulders - where death always lurks - and spot the raptor that is about to turn me into a meal.
My life flashes by. It has been a good run. There is nothing more to fear. I accept this. I just wish for my chicks to make it to...
