Molten Burns

Trigger Warning: Mild body horror.

Can there be worse things out there than melting your face off? Probably, but not when you decide to pluck some lava peppers and actually picked molten lava peppers, resulting in the worst incident in your life. Molten burns are caused by eating any food found in the goddess, Joramy's domain. However, some foods have found their way into the material plane and grow near active volcanoes -- often ones currently spewing lava.

Symptoms

Within a minute of eating a single molten lava pepper, the patient will experience mild irritation in the throat and nasal passageways as well as tears forming in the eyes. They begin to salivate from the heat. If not careful, one might miss the obvious signs of distress the patient is undergoing.   After an hour, the patient will notice that their body temperature is rising, even after the heat from the pepper has died down from their throat and mouth. During this time the patient will feel queezy and become lethargic, thinking they merely have an upset stomach from eating something spicy.   By the time three hours have passed, the patient will notice their flesh is boiling hot as blisters start to form and their skin turns a reddish-hue. If the skin is slightly touched, the flesh will feel soft and stretchy, easily peeling off in large clumps. The longer they are left untreated, the more damage is done, until it will eventually be too irreversible and cause death.

Treatment

Seeking immediate medical attention is the appropriate action to do, since it lowers the risk of severe damage and infection to exposed muscle or tissue. People often mistake the first symptoms as a typical reaction from eating a hot pepper, and end up with a disfigured body.   Cooling the body down can help alleviate symptoms as well as lower the body temperature. Ice baths with continuously pouring ice can help, or getting in any freezing body of water or laying in the snow can reduce the molten time by 75% and allow for the patient to receive care from a local medic.

Prevention

Simply know your edible foods when going on an adventure. Molten lava peppers and lava peppers look very similar, but their hues are slightly different. A molten lava pepper is cherry red whereas a lava pepper is a strawberry red. Now, there have been known instances where as a molten lava pepper had a mutation with its coloration and appeared a bit closer to a strawberry red than a cherry red.   Even tieflings and dragonborns need to avoid the peppers as they, too, can be affected by the molten burns. Only the divine, infernals, and the champions of Joramy are immune to the extensive high heat temperatures produced by the molten lava peppers.
