Dwarf
Civilization and Culture
History
Before The Great Upheaval there were several legendary dwarven underground kingdoms but when the earth shook and the world broke, all the known dwarven kingdoms were destroyed, causing countless deaths.
Since The Great Upheaval the dwarves have roamed the Shattered Kingdoms, trying to find and build communities where they could. They do their best at preserving their culture and traditions as they can, forming communities where they can.
Common Myths and Legends
Legend has it that the dwarves owe their creation to two deities, Torbera The Forge Mother and the Crystal Father. Working together, they took earth from the Shattered Kingdoms, crafting the bodies of the first dwarves. They then infused their bodies with the magic of the plane Endaheim, causing the first dwarves to come alive.
The Forge Mother was more focused on imparting the essence of the divine into the first dwarves, teaching them all she knew about forging and using the divine magic in protecting themselves and their community. The Crystal Father on the other hand, while a divine being was a master of the arcane. He filled the first dwarves with his arcane powers, teaching them how to use their powers and developing the dwarven arcane traditions. Both of those traits, the divine and the arcane were innate in the dwarves, it flowed through their veins, it gave them a deep understanding of the nature of both arcane and divine magics.
However, not everything was perfect, behind the relationship between The Forge Mother and the Crystal Father lurked a dark cloud, the god Mundgrum, the cousin of the Crystal Father. He had grown jealous of the relationship between the two deities. He coveted the Forge Mother and was envious of their creation of the dwarves who flourished and adored their creators.
Out of jealousy and envy Mundgrum stole his cousin, the Crystal Father from Torbera and ripped the arcane power out of the dwarves' lineage, sealing both the god and the arcane power of the dwarves away, erasing them from history. This caused the Immortal first race of dwarves to be turned back into the earth they had been made from, and any innate arcane magic possessed by their children, the dwarves we know now, was forever lost. Not even the memory of what they last is known.
This is why the dwarves have no arcane traditions of their own. Every dwarf feels there is some aspect of their very nature missing, a hole that can not be filled. However they do embrace what they have, worshipping the Forge Mother and embracing the gifts that she gave them.
