Krussar

The small nation of Krussar consists of Usyron, Yondy, and Elesas, three former city states that were part of the Athis Val confederation. The three city states were conquered and united by the Half-orc warlord Krussar and his mercenary company - called the Steel Fists - after a magical calamity threw the city states in disarray. Krussar rules his nation as a dictator but the system of laws that the elderly Half-Orc introduced causes the people to be judged harshly but fair. Transgressors are punished severely by the Steel Fists while those who live honestly and abide by the laws enjoy greater protection then they did before the regime change. Though the nation consists of three former Athis Val city states and their territories, the current nation of Krussar is now drastically different from the neighbouring states it was aligned with. In a mere 32 years Krussar forcefully altered the nation to become his vision of a safe and stable nation. The first and most important change was to outlaw all forms of arcane magic that is not licensed and controlled by the state. Divine and nature magic are viewed with less suspicon. allthough practicioners of these forms of magic are watched closely as well. Since the city states of Athis Val have allways been highly reliant on magic, and boast an unusually high number of magical practicioners, these rulings caused a great deal of outrage at first and many magically gifted were killed, captured or deported in the early days of Krussar's reign. After securing his territory, Krussar also reinforced the borders of his nation and put a stop to the free trade and travel between Krussar and the surrounding areas. Any traffick and trade is now highly monitored to keep the nation safe from what Krussar calls 'the taint of magic'. The regime change and the following changes have caused relations between Krussar and Athis Val to become extremely tense. The mage cities have taken no steps beyond publicly condoning the new regime and its anti-magic policy but many fear it's a simple matter of time before war breaks out.

History

Deep within the Shadetouched Bog lies a grove of decayed trees, where the veil between the Material Plane and the Shadowfell is extremely thin, and travel between the two was possible. Magic from the Shadowfell spilled out and altered the surrounding area, a phenomenon that fascinated the mages of Athis Val. A research collective from the city states Usyron, Yondy, and Elesas that bordered the Shadetouched Bog researched and monitored the grove and the magical influence that was present. When the research collective tried an experiment to harness the powers from the Shadowfell, disaster struck. A hole was torn in the veil between the two planes and it spilled forth dangerous magicks and horrors both living and dead that were native to the Shadowfell. The three city states tried to contain the accident while keeping it a secret from the wider world, but they struggled to regain control. As some of the dangers started to spill out beyond the Shadetouched bog, causing a panic amongst the populace, the three city states hired the renowned and professional Steel Fists mercenary company to hunt the invasive creatures from the Shadowfell and to protect an expedition of mages to the Bog in an attempt to stabilise the tear, without briefing the mercenaries of the true extent of the dangers they would face. After a hard-won victory, losing many lives of both the mages and the mercenaries in the process, the expedition succeeded in stabilising the rift, though they were unable to truly close it alltogether. Krussar, the commander of the Steel Fists was so outraged at the losses suffered and the secrecy of the mages that he forced the surviving members of the expedition to spill the beans on the calamity that had transpired and the expedition that had cost so many lives. Learning the truth, Krussar vowed that no one who would endanger his own people so deserved to be in power, and that he would set things right. Krussar then called for a meeting with the leaders of the three city states to discuss the results of the expedition. As they met within the council chambers of Elesas, Krusas had them all executed and proclaimed himself the new ruler of the city while announcing publicly the perceived crimes of the three city states that caused the calamity within the Shadetouched bog. The outrage amongst the populace in the three cities caused civil unrest and riots, and with the leadership of all three states executed, it caused a panic that Krussar was able to exploit by sending in his forces to restore order and claim the rulership in the process. Several ordnances and the command skills of Krussar allowed them to restore order and slowly secure the leadership of the three city states, while announcing to the outside world that the coup was justified by punishing those who had been close to releasing a tremendous danger on the entirety of Ussath Riel. Only when power was firmly in Krussar's hand, and with much of the common populace at his back, did Krussar start with turning his fledgling nation into a dictatorship modeled after the fair and stable nation that he dreamed off.
