Gilmond
The city of Gilmond is the capital of Nestur and the seat of power for the ruling council of the republic. It is know for it's diverse population encompassing many different minority communities and the largest concentration of both Tieflings and Drow on the surface of Sharrodras. The eclectic nature of the city reflects the diversity of the inhabitants and the personal freedoms they treasure, with many different buildings that appear to reject any uniform architectural style. The only form of uniformity can be found in the various cultural districts throughout the cities, some encompassing no more than a handfull of shops and homes, while others take up large tracts of the city. The largest and most remarkable of these is the Drow district little Menzoberranzan, which functions an independant city in it's own right that operates on an inverted timetable, allowing the Drow to avoid most of the daylight hours that are so uncomfortable to them. This has caused Gilmond to be known as "the city that never sleeps", and allows residents and visitors to find shops and workshops to be productive on any given hour, depending on where they look.
Depending on who you are asking, Gilmond is either known as a free haven for anyone of a different race or a different way of thinking where all contribute to the nation as a whole, or as a troubled city where one has to live in constant fear of either the seedy underbelly of the city or the secret police. Both viewpoints have merit and the reality lies in the middle, as the nation of Nestur is welcoming to those who are shunned elsewhere, which has also allowed criminal elements to thrive but it does keep a close watch that all contribute to the nation as a whole and do not become too much of a threat to others or the ideals of the republic. Any who cross this line, whether citizen, criminal, or noble, runs the risk of getting a visit from the secret police and this has helped to keep even the dark underbelly of Gilmond in check, as long as they prove useful in some way.
Industry & Trade
Gilmond houses a wide range of crafts and trades. The absence of guilds has allowed many different specialized businesses to be set up, though most of these remain small because of the niche market they target. The lack of protection that the guilds would offer also means there's a higher turnover for businesses. Besides the various specialised crafts, Gilmond is also known as one of the few markets for goods from the underdark which are hard to come by elsewhere.
