Warden

The Wardens of the Veil are the administrative and enforcement arm of the Circuit, serving as the constant, visible presence of the government within Haven's districts. They are the public face of the Pylon Concordat, tasked with ensuring order and enforcing the will of the Council of Pillars.   For a city the size of Haven, there are approximately 100 to 150 Wardens at any given time. This number is carefully maintained to ensure that each district is adequately staffed, but also to preserve the prestige and authority of the title. They are seen as a respected, but somewhat common, tier of the Conduit hierarchy.

Career

Qualifications

The path to becoming a Warden is a rigorous one, requiring a blend of magical aptitude, academic achievement, and proven loyalty to the Circuit. The position is a coveted one, and the qualifications are designed to ensure that only the most capable and devoted Conduits are entrusted with the city's internal security.   1. Graduation from the Academy of Pylons A potential Warden must first be a graduate of the Academy of Pylons. They must have demonstrated a high level of magical control and theoretical knowledge, performing well in their classes at the Hall of Illumination and in their combat simulations at the Arena of Mastery.   2. Acolyte of the Veil After graduation, a promising Conduit is appointed as an Acolyte of the Veil. This is a probationary period where they are assigned to a senior Warden as an underling. In this role, they assist with patrols, mediate minor disputes, and are trained in the practical application of their magic. This period is a crucial test of their discipline, loyalty, and on-the-ground judgment. The number of Acolytes a Warden may oversee varies depending on their rank and the needs of the district, with more experienced Wardens in busy areas like the Grand Bazaar often having several Acolytes under their command.   3. Proven Magical Aptitude and Control An Acolyte must demonstrate exceptional control over their abilities and a deep understanding of their magical circuitry. They must prove they can not only wield their magic effectively but can also perform the intricate, localized spells required to activate and control the Guardian Pylons under pressure.   4. Selection by the Council of Pillars The final qualification is not earned, but bestowed. The appointment of a Warden is not a promotion based on a test score but a formal decree from the Council of Pillars. The council members review a candidate's record, their performance as an Acolyte, and their family's standing to determine if they are a suitable fit for the role. This political aspect of the selection process ensures that all Wardens are not just capable, but also aligned with the Circuit's interests.
