Ground

Grounds are the foundational, yet least acknowledged, caste of the O'che. Unlike the vibrant Charges, who possess vibrant hair, eye, and skin tones, or the bold Conduits, with their striking hair, eye, and skin tones, Grounds are characterized by a dullness in their hair, eye, and skin tones, and a general lack of the ethereal glow or striking features seen in other O'che types. While all O'che are humanoid as they were created to be, Grounds are the untouchable caste, relegated to the most arduous and mundane tasks that magic cannot accomplish, such as heavy lifting, construction, farming, and the care of Budlings. Their existence is one of constant labor and quiet resilience.   Crucially, Grounds are the origin of all O'che life. They are the vessels from which new Budlings are born. A unique and grim aspect of their physiology is their reaction to ingesting the stone of a deceased Charge. This act causes the Ground to shatter, dissolving into a cluster of three to five new Budlings. This process is always fatal for the Ground. There is no predictive method to determine the number or type of O'che these offspring will become, and consequently, these Budlings are never attributed back to the Ground from which they emerged. This unpredictable and often fatal reproductive process, combined with the societal pressure that "the weak and useless are made into Budlings," instills a profound work ethic and a drive for constant utility among Grounds.

Naming Traditions

Other names

Grounds typically receive functional and unadorned names, often reflecting their role, a specific task, or a simple descriptor. These names are practical and rarely carry the poetic or aspirational qualities found in Charge names. Given their lack of individual attribution for Budlings, their names emphasize their collective utility rather than personal identity. Examples might include: Stone, Root, Clay, Loom, Hearth, Grain, Iron, Steadfast, Endure.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

The Code of Enduring Labor: Grounds are expected to work tirelessly and without complaint, viewing their toil as their fundamental contribution to Haven's survival. Idleness is a grave transgression. While many Grounds adhere to this code, their compliance is largely driven by the expectations and power dynamics imposed by the higher castes, as idleness is a grave transgression that can lead to severe consequences.   The Code of Silent Resilience: They are to face hardship with stoicism, enduring pain and exhaustion without outward display. Emotional expression, especially of weakness or dissatisfaction, is suppressed.   The Code of Unseen Foundation: Grounds value their role as the unseen backbone of society, understanding that their manual efforts enable the existence of the higher castes. Their worth is derived from their utility.   The Code of Collective Survival: While individual identity is deemphasized, there is a quiet, unspoken understanding and solidarity among Grounds, recognizing their shared struggle and mutual reliance in their tasks.

Common Etiquette rules

Towards Bonded Conduit: Grounds maintain extreme deference, avoiding direct eye contact and speaking only when directly addressed, and then with utmost brevity and humility. They will often lower their gaze and assume a submissive posture. Towards Unbonded Conduit: Similar to bonded Conduits, but with an even greater distance. Grounds will actively avoid proximity and interaction unless absolutely necessary for a task.   Towards Charges: Grounds are expected to be invisible unless their labor is required. They will step aside, avert their gaze, and maintain silence. Any direct interaction is minimal and purely transactional, often involving curt instructions from the Charge.   Towards Budlings: Grounds are the sole caste granted access to Budlings, and their interactions are characterized by profound kindness, unwavering love, and nurturing support. Budlings are considered exceptionally precious, representing the future of the O'che. Grounds handle them with utmost gentleness, providing constant care, comfort, and encouragement, fostering their growth with a tenderness rarely seen in their interactions with other castes.   Towards Other Grounds: In the presence of Conduits and Charges, interactions among Grounds remain strictly practical and efficient, focused solely on task coordination, with minimal verbal exchange or emotional display. However, behind closed doors, away from the scrutinizing eyes of the higher castes, Grounds shed their stoic facade. Here, their interactions become vibrant with profound kindness, unwavering support, and deep passion for one another. This hidden intimacy and emotional connection are what truly sustain them and provide the strength to endure their harsh existence.

Common Dress code

Grounds wear simple, durable, and practical clothing made from coarse, undyed fabrics. Their attire is designed for utility and protection during manual labor, often featuring reinforced seams, multiple pockets for tools, and muted, earthy tones that blend into their surroundings. There is no emphasis on aesthetics or adornment; clothing is purely functional.

Common Taboos

Idleness or Laziness: The most severe transgression, as it directly threatens their purpose and can lead to being deemed "use less."   Seeking Recognition or Praise: Grounds are expected to perform their duties without seeking acknowledgment.   Expressing Ambition or Personal Desire: Any indication of wanting to rise above their station or pursue individual goals is strictly forbidden.   Direct Confrontation or Disobedience: Challenging a higher caste member or refusing a command is met with severe consequences.   Displaying Weakness or Complaint: Public displays of fatigue, pain, or dissatisfaction are seen as a sign of being "weak" and can lead to their transformation into Budlings.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

The beauty ideals for Grounds are starkly different from those of Charges or Conduits. Their "beauty" is found in their strength, resilience, and unwavering utility. A "beautiful" Ground is one who is robust, capable of heavy labor, and possesses an unyielding spirit in the face of hardship. Their features are often weathered, their hands calloused, and their bodies built for endurance rather than delicate grace. There is a quiet, earthy dignity in their stoicism and their fundamental role in sustaining Haven.
