Togashi Daigo
Scars of the Beyond
A lowly ascetic belonging to the Shinseist Monk Order and originally the Togashi Family of the Dragon Clan. Togashi Daigo became somewhat famous in monastic circles for approaching enlightenment, of a sort only the Shinseists understand, at a relatively young age. The attempt failed, however, and was not without its cost. Drawing so close to a supernatural essence and then pulling away left part of Daigo with it. In the physical world, this manifested as a maimed visage and cognitive lapses which have spliced out chunks of his memory ever since. As such, he was left with merely a sense of what he had accomplished and no knowledge of how to pursue it once again.
Seeking to remedy his student's faltered progress, Daigo's master has sent him to study with the Dragonfly Clan at the edge of Rokugan's wilds. By living with and aiding the Tonbō Family, it was hoped that Daigo might mend his flawed alignment with the natural world. Naturally, the young monk acceded to this suggestion. His only desire was to finally seize the enlightenment he was once denied.
In truth, there was another, more sinister reason for his pilgrimage. When in the deepest meditation, touching the spiritual world, something on the other side seems to have glimpsed Daigo back. Following the accident which left him maimed, this fell presence has stalked him from the edge of perception. Usually it manifests as a mere darkness in the corner of Daigo's eye, but seems to be growing ever closer the longer he remains stagnant.
For his journey, Daigo brought only a set of common clothes, a sturdy knife in a traveling pack, a pet cricket in a cage, and a unique linked bō staff capable of separating into chained segments. This weapon was passed down from his ancestors in the Togashi clan and is said to be a replica of a legendary weapon wielded by the Dragon Clan of old. As for the cricket, that was a gift from his master upon Daigo's departure. Trained to recognize signs of agitation in its master, the insect's chirps are key in keeping him grounded. Most of the time, these sounds draw him from a cognitive lapse or drive the darkness from the edges of his vision.
