Sheshen
Destined Guardian
A nondescript samurai of the Tonbō Family in the Dragonfly Clan. In truth, this identity is merely a front. Sheshen is a Naga Seer hailing from the depths of the Shinomen Mori. Having mastered their race's ability to Bend Perception, they pass seamlessly as a human when placed against all but the keenest or most supernatural scrutiny.
An ancient Naga prophecy states a being of accursed blood will bring peace to the human lands surrounding Shinomen Mori, and therefore prevent chaos from seeping through the forest and disturbing their slumber. In accordance with this foretelling, Sheshen was dispatched to guard this "accursed" individual and ensure they are able to fulfill their special role. This goal has been complicated for now, however, by their falling-in with Bayushi Chūyō, an honorless Kitsune. Both yōkai quickly saw through each other's disguises and such knowledge could be easily used as blackmail in such intolerant Human company.
Such misfortune is strange for Sheshen. Indeed, they are normally so lucky that other Tonbō samurai joke they must have been blessed by Bishamon with fortune and creative spark. What's more, Sheshen's propensity for charity to those less fortunate should stave off any ill karma that might otherwise hound them. What spats of bad luck this naga suffers are normally only in the form of small birds, which inexplicably activate some primal fear response in Sheshen's mind.
Still, their mission being delayed is not necessarily so disheartening. Clandestine task aside, Sheshen finds themselves fascinated by humans and the complexity of their culture. On more than one occasion, the naga has stymied a wish that they could live in harmony with humanity. These musings are in direct opposition to the teachings of the Naga Elders, however, and should not even be thought of idly.
In their human guise, Sheshen appears as an unremarkable, if well-equipped and battle-hardened Dragonfly woman. Their light armor is complemented by a large naginata, yumi, a quiver of arrows, and a nondescript traveling pack. This last contains their most prized and forbidden possessions: a sacred Naga pearl and a cursed knife, said to be able to slay even the most unholy beasts of the Shadowlands, but at a terrible price to its wielder.
