Horiuchi Makena (They/Them)
The Laughing Broker
A samurai of the Unicorn Clan sent to Rindō to negotiate a bulk purchase of lumber. Horiuchi Makena's presence in the village is welcomed under the general customs of hospitality, but also with a generous amount of suspicion. For the first, they are a member of the Unicorn Clan, whom many traditionalists view as not quite part of the Empire despite reinstatement to major clan status around two centuries ago. For the second, the Horiuchi family is the newest among them and their role is not yet as well-established as many. For the third, the crass matter of mercantile negotiations is hardly suitable for a samurai. And, finally, there is the matter of Makena themself.
A broad, full-bellied individual with dark skin and laughing eyes, Makena is far from what most Rokugani would assume when prompted to think of a samurai. Yet their daishō remains plainly affixed to their side and they wear the purple and gold furs fitting a Unicorn of considerable status. Makena's thick, lustrous hair is most often tied in an elaborate braid that reaches down their back. They are obviously proud of it, flipping the length from shoulder to shoulder as they speak.
For their role as negotiator, however, they seem well-suited. Makena's warm laugh and open expression can seemingly lower the defenses of even a jaded Scorpion. Relying on these advantages, they have been taking negotiations slow, enjoying their time in remote Rindō while wearing down Magistrate Shosuro Jūko toward a deal favorable for the Horiuchi Family.
