The creation of the five continents

The five witches could not agree on how to guide the people of Shanalar. Not wanting to work together they decided to split the world into five continents.

"The earth cracked and shook as large fissures appeared in the ground. The land split into five pieces. four pieces moved north, east, south, and west. The fifth piece stayed in the middle. Each witch now had their own land and people to watch over." -excerpt from The Tectonic Sunder   As the five witches could not agree upon ways to lead the people of Shanalar they decided to split the world into five continents. During this event, several villages along the split lines where destroyed killing most of the inhabitants. Travelers and merchants who were away from their homes could not return and were forever split from their loved ones.   The Witches, drained of their magical energy, retreated to hidden places to rest and before they would return to their people.
