Souha markings
"Although this is not the only tradition of it's kind it is one of the oldest. The Tel'a'Sei have been marking the people of their Souh, their clans, long before written history dictates. Some marks changed over time, reflecting the new bonds and leaders. Others disappeared completely after the fall of a clan. Even new ones arise from time to time when certain groups don't agree with their clan anymore. While the marks may wildly vary a slave is always recognized by an angled line underneath the mark, showing that the slave is lower than the clan." - Studies on Tel'a'Sei traditions Vol.II by Kire Aeret, Omur cleric
History
It is unclear who started the tradition. As the history of marking Souh members started before written script. Most of the history surrounding the Souha markings comes from tales told by the Souh elders. The oldest Souha claim that they were the first Souh ti be created.
One account that the old tales agree one is that the marking of the first Souh was used to unify the Tel'a'Sei. before the first marking it was believed that there was a lot of infighting between the Tel'a'Sei. The first Souh and the subsequant rise of other Souha brought the Tel'a'Sei together.
While there still exists rivalry between the Souha disputes are now settled with competition instead of war. This competition between the Souha grew fiercer after the The great Tel'a'sei migration. To remedy this the various Souha were each given specific tasks and jobs to further their grand goal. Now they will only compete in enslaving other creatures and generating resources.
Components and tools
The markings on the Tel'a'Sei are created by a needle and a hammer. Etching red talor sap in the skin. The marking of a Tel'a'Sei happens after they reach adulthood to prevent their growth from changing the marking.
When slaves are edged the Tel'a'Sei will cut in the slave's skin with a red hot glowing blade.
