Personal history

Things started long before Joy was even born.   In the city of Chent a influential sorcerer called Narcaris, who enjoyed spending his free time collecting rare and powerful objects, was able to come into contact with a merchant who had a powerful deck of cards in his possession. He had heard many rumors about what this deck was capable of doing, and one day was able to meet with this merchant who promised him world altering magic. All he had to do was pick a card. So he eagerly drew a card from it.   After pulling a card the knight was created. The knight then procceeded to kneel infront of Narcaris, present his sword and begin pronouncing his devotion to the sorcerer and he promised to protect him with everything he had. Looking at the knight Narcaris felt underwhelmed, after everything he had heard about this deck this knight seemed to be lacking. He stated that while he found this declaration "touching" he had no need for something so unworthy.   "For in my presence you are nothing. And I could hardly let someone so beneath me protect me".   And in an instant Narcaris channeled his power into the sword and procceded to shatter it infront of the knight. Leaving him with nothing but the broken handle.   Leaving the knight kneeling behind him unable to proccess what had just been done to his sword, Narcaris demanded to be allowed to draw from the deck once again as all he had be promised had not come to fruition. The merchant presented the deck to him again with a smile and allowed him to draw once more.   This time Narcaris drew the donjon card. In an instant he vanishes before the knights eyes and all the clothes he was wearing clatter to the floor in a pile. The knight freezes he doesn't know what to do...what can he do. He has no sword and he can't wield any magic. He watched his Socerer vanish before his eyes and he couldn't do a thing.   The knight remained frozen to the spot for who knows how long before a tower guard comes in and witnesses the scene laid before him. He arrests the knight assuming that he had assassinated the sorcerer and a formal investigation is opened.   The knight spends several weeks in prison. He is paid many visits by guards and mages alike for interrogations. The merchant was nowhere to be found, infact there was no evidence there ever was one there in the first place. Eventually he is finally let go when it is proven that Narcaris was removed by a spell far more powrful than the knight was capable of conjuring.   The knight was cast out onto the streets of the city. A free man but still under the suspicion of the mages and guards alike. He was heartbroken and left without purpose or direction. He was created to protect and always be beside Narcaris, however Narcaris had declared that he didn't want him before he vanished. What was he left to do?         Over the next few years the knight stayed within Chent, unable to leave the last place that his summoner stood. Luckly he was able to find work but it was never anything special or really fulfilling. He would frequent taverns in his free time, and he found the alcohol and people inside a useful distraction. It was during this time he met Liecia, Joy's mother.   One very early morning while the Knight was walking home from a shift of guard duty he ran into a woman. She was human and she was beautiful, but also injured. He immediately came to her aid, noticing that it appeared as if she had been stabbed in the back. He inquired what happened. She was pretty dismissive at first trying to state that she was ok and that he should just move along, however he was more insistent that she was obviously not ok and that he was happy to help her even if it was just to the closest tavern so he could patch her up.   She could sense no hostility from him and he seemed sincere in his desire to help her, so she agreed and they went to the tavern. On the way she explained while she was traveling last night she was ambushed by a man, he only managed to get her once but only because he surprised her from behind. Once at the tavern the knight was able to help her tend to her wounds, she got him some drinks to say thank you and the converations really started to flow. Then before you know it they started hooking up. They only spent a handful of nights together when the knight suddenly had this thought that what if she could be someone he protects and devotes himself to? But when everything seemed to be going well Liecia suddenly left. No note, no goodbye, just one day she was there and the next gone.   Until nine months later... She returned back to the same tavern. The knight was still staying there in a room upstairs and still spending his free days at the bar drinking and socialising between shifts. She approached him, "I’m sorry I couldn't be what you needed, you really do seem like a honourable man. Probably one of the first true ones I've ever met. Look...I have something here that could use the protection and kindness of a real knight. And I remembered that I just happened to know where one lived".   She then carefully handed the knight a bundle, and began to leave. When the knight peeked inside he saw the face of a baby.   The knight was very confused and started to get up suddenly to pursue her and calling out asking her what she was doing leaving a baby with him. When Liecia turned back to him she had a faraway look on her face. Then she explained she had no desire for relationships or to be tied down by anything.   The knight was taken back by how cold she was suddenly being. But he once again pushed and said that if she is hurt or in trouble he can be there to protect her, but she just has to stay.   When he mentions trouble she seems to only harden in her resolve. "No trouble..." She looks at the baby. "Just me".   Liecia takes one final look at the baby then back at the knight, who at this point is looking very concerned.   "Try not to look so worried. It a baby not a monster. Use those skills I know you have and raise her well, and it will turn into a bond that will last forever".   After which she left one more time and he never saw her again.   The knight now left with this baby in the middle of a tavern has no idea what to do, when he hears a little whine for the first time. Gazing down at the baby who has started to stir, her eyes opened and gazed up at him for the first time.   In this moment of first contact when the knight looked down into his baby's eyes, he felt something within him. Something he had never felt before. Even if it was only small, it was a feeling he had never felt up until this point and it brought upon him a moment of peace. Something that had never touched his existence up until now. In a moment of inspiration he decided to name his baby after it. So even in times when the feeling would all but fade and disappear he would have a reminder of it close by.   Joy.         Liecia was not just a human as Joy would come to learn. She was actually a lycanthrope. She met Joy's father the night after a full moon when she had been wounded by a hunter who was in pursuit of her. Joy's fey and lyan blood together makes her barbarian talents both powerful and frightning to most. She is able to change parts of her body into weapons which has been helpful to get her out of a bind, however if not for the adrenaline of her rage the pain would probably knock her out cold. First time her lycan side manifested she was 9 years old. She has never told her father about any of this.         The first few years of Joy's life were great for both her and her father. It seemed like her coming into his life was able to revitalise him and he was able to clean up his act and be a fully devoted parent. However around the time Joy was three things started to fall back into how they were prior, and the creeping emptiness and feelings of abandonment and the need to be needed. He started drinking again and pursuing many relationships that were all doomed to fail.   Joy was almost four when her first sibling was born, she has three siblings and very different relationships with them all.   She started working at a local mercenary company as cleaner when she was six and inbetween work she would tend to and/or spend her father and watch over her young siblings, who didn't live with them for varying reasons. Once she was older she began to train as a mercenary, as it had been noted on several occasions by guild members that she had a particularly strong arm on her and some instincts built for killing.   She continued to work at the company within the city for many years, and was even able to secure a permanent home for her and her dad with some negotations with a tavern owner who was in need of a new guard.   Now 27 years old Joy feels like she has got a hold on things. Both her father and herself are working, they have their own place and they even have had recent talks about their futures, maybe even taking a trip together to see the ocean like they always wanted.   But no, as soon as the good times are there he begins to feel it again. The pull, the tether. The thread that binds him to Narcaris. One day Joy watches for the last time the smile leave his face when she makes up her mind. She's going to save him from this hell, then the two of them are leaving this city forever.   She sets things in motion quickly not wanting to waste even a second more. She decides the best course of action is to track down the merchant that deals in these cards and make him free her father. And maybe also in the process stop this from happening to anyone else.   Her father is there to wave her off as she leaves. But as shes about to go he presents her with the handle of the broken sword and asks her to carry it with her to bless her travels and to always keep him in her thoughts. Her father has held onto the broken sword all these years as it was the only object he had that Narcaris had given him, it was his most beloved object. But he wants to be free and giving Joy the blade proves that to her.     Now with a harden resolve Joy leave Chent behind, now on the hunt for the one who can free her father.
