Languages Old to New
Each region has their own ancient language that many words have shifted down from into the current common language. They are both old and new versions of these tongues as well.
In Upper Kaldanar there is the language Old Avarian which many avarian scholars still speak so that they may read the ancient texts. Old Avarian is also used to record the histories of the royal family, so it is still commonly used for recordkeeping but it is not used by the common people.
In Vulca, the newer language is Vulcari but is has its roots in Old Draconian, which is the root language for all draconid languages. It was originally spoken by the dragons and is something rather rough to the ear and difficult to speak for those who are not fully draconic. The language simplified into something any caste could speak and Vulcari itself is the dialect of the fire draconids that hail from Vulca, where the Ancient Fire Dragon King, Kinerix, reigned. One pair of words that has been brought from Old Draconian but their meaning has changed would be Shisha and Shashi. Originally, these words meant ‘Soul Mate’. Shisha would be the feminine counterpart and Shashi would be the masculine counterpart. In more modern draconid dialects, Shisha and Shashi now simply mean wife and husband, or the main wife or main husband for the draconids with harems. Another term that has come from Old Draconian is not used for the most innocent would be a phrase that roughly translates to ‘shifting your scales around’ and it means partaking in promiscuous acts with whomever asks.
In the country of Ranu, where the fae primarily reside, they have many sayings from their old language that have filtered through their vocabulary through the years. An old term that is still sometimes used would be calling someone a ‘Fornori’. Originally it was a slanderous term used for elves and fairies who had not developed their wings yet and was commonly used to describe someone as someone who would not fly high because they did not have wings to soar. In more recent years it is simply used to refer to someone as someone who will likely not do well, be they fairy, elf, or otherwise.
