Leporidae Cryptids
Magical creatures related to the Leporidae family (rabbits and hares).
Basic Information
Anatomy
- Jackalopes resemble (and can interbreed with) any ordinary American jackrabbit, they just have antlers.
- Wolpertingers and skvaders resemble (and can interbreed with) any ordinary European rabbit, with the addition of a wood grouse's wings and tail in the skvader's case and pheasant wings and deer's antlers in the wolpertinger's case.
- The almiraj/al-mi'raj resemble (and can interbreed with) the Cape Hare of Africa, Arabia and India, but with fur of gold and a single horn like that of a unicorn.
Genetics and Reproduction
Like is the case when supernaturals intermarry with humans, their magical genes are generally recessive. Reproduction is comparable to ordinary hares and rabbits in numbers and frequency.
Dietary Needs and Habits
While the jackalope and skvader are herbivores like their ordinary jackrabbit and rabbit counterparts, the wolpertinger and almiraj/al-mi'raj have been known to be omnivorous or even carnivorous.
Additional Information
Uses, Products & Exploitation
- Jackalopes have the ability to copy any singing that they've heard-- much better than a parrot, though they use it for similar social purposes. They're very popular for use as backup singers by supernatural musicians.
- Wolpertingers and skvaders obviously share an ability to fly, but they're much more popular for their hybrid meat.
- Almiraj/al-mi'raj have the magical ability to make any creature that lays eyes on it – predator or prey – flee. For this reason, they're often kept by travelers as protection from wild beasts.
