Republic of Gammasia
The history of Gammasia is one of conflict. In the early days of the realm, humans depended on the sea for their survival. Those who were unsuccessful in their fishing turned to raiding of their neighbors. Raiding became a way of life on the coasts, and eventually even those further inland fell victim. Design of ships capable of combat became paramount to the growth and success of raiding bands. The strongest survive in Gammasia.
As the raiding parties continued to spread, their numbers also grew to the point of having permanent settlements. Strongholds warred on strongholds, until one emerged more powerful than the rest. After emerging the strongest of all raiders, the Thorned Waveriders moved to cement their power. No raids were to be carried out without their approval, and tribute was owed every year for their protection. Though the people of the realm suffered a loss of power, they gained safety. Those who broke the peace were most often made harsh examples of. Wealth for the Thorned Waveriders began to stagnate under the system without unsustainably harsh tribute, and so another source was sought. The answer was close the entire time.
Fine white sand comprises the coasts of Gammasia, which creates the finest glass in the world. Glasscraft was further mastered in the realm through the art of staining, with red being most readily accomplished. The stronghold was renamed to Crimson Hold, and the motif of the Rose adopted as a more dignified symbol. A knighthood was created from the former raiders, the Thorned Waveriders were henceforth known as the Order of the Rose. Its members named themselves noble above the others of the realm. Infighting lead to the creation of a hierarchy of nobility, and a begrudgingly shared leadership of the realm. As crafting of stained glass took off in Crimson Hold, its use was widespread in the city. To further emphasize its appeal to all visitors, all but the poorest of buildings utilized it in some form. Solid stonework composes the walls of all prominent structures, and red tile used for roofing. The paved streets are lit by night with lamps that also make use of stained glass motifs.
Trade of the glasswork is strictly controlled, and other commodities traded only after taxing. Naval superiority of Gammasian ships ensures that very few escape the iron grip of the elite of the realm. Traders from other realms are escorted to safe ports by the Gammasian navy. This is done to ensure that trade is protected and encourage foreigners to brave the travel. In addition to protection on the seas, foreign merchants pay only a small tariff. By drawing outland trade to local ports, the realm has ensured that any goods of quality throughout the world can be found in Gammasia.
Structure
Elected nobles form a ruling body, the Aristocratic Assembly, over the Republic. The Assembly elects one of their members to preside over the Assembly. Whomever is elected is granted the title of Archduke, granting them five additional counts to their standard weighted vote and allowing them to decide the outcome of tied votes in the Assembly. Archdukes are permitted to serve in the position for five years before another election may be held. There is no limit to the number of times an Archduke may be elected. In the hierarchy of the nobility, rank affords more weight to votes. Membership in one of the knightly orders affords additional weight. In essence - the more prestigious the member is, the more weight their vote should carry.
All recognized members of the nobility have at least one keep in their command. A Baron is a member of the nobility who commands a single keep and might also be lord over a settlement of Village size or smaller. Above Baron is Earl, who presides over either a town or several villages. Dukes are above Earls, and are rulers of cities, or several towns. Each increase in the noble hierarchy adds one more vote to the weight, from a base of one for Barons. Members of the Knightly orders who are also Barons or higher receive an additional one to three votes depending on the prestige of the Order. The Order of the Rose is highest, followed by the Order of the Serpent, and lastly the Order of the Flame. As an example, an Earl who is in the Order of the Flame would count as three votes on a matter whereas a Duke who was in the Order of the Rose would count as six votes.
