Khatlaqta

Nestled in a large valley a few days travel from the border of Aenuleria is the oldest city in the realm: Khatlaqta. The large amount of stone readily available has allowed the inhabitants to build strong homes against wildlife attacks. Numerous springs are present in the valley, providing an abundance of water. Stone canals run water from the surrounding springs and runoff from the heights into the safety of the city. Thick stone walls surround the city, the blocks set atop one another and shaped to press flush against one another. All buildings are similarly constructed. Internal walls also are constructed of stone, with support pillars needed for large rooms. This is due to stonework even being used in the roof, generally a large slab. Thatch and wood proved early on to provide little protection against some creatures of the jungle. The solid roof also easily allows the placement of gardens atop each home, as self-sufficiency is essential to life. Most buildings have large circular stone doors that are rolled into place when needed.   The valley chosen to build the city is also home to Der’Khat, the dire black panther. Acolytes of Der’Khat placate the apex predator, helping protect the inhabitants against her hunger. Donations to the acolytes have resulted in much ornamentation in their temple. Though most buildings have stonework doors, the temple to Der’Khat and home of the High Chief have ornate brass doors. Motifs of the great panther adorn the temple door, in numerous poses. The door to the home of the High Chief is decorated with a mural of all the apex predators, with Der’Khat placed larger and above the rest. Ore veins being relatively rare in the realm, and copper most common among them, has resulted in brass and bronze being utilized only by the most prestigious of denizens.   Unlike other settlements in the realm, Khatlaqta is home to an active night life. Reverence of the nocturnal nature of Der’Khat has led many inhabitants to mimic this trait. With the blessing of Der’Khat to her people, the lack of light in the streets does not bother them. All who dwell within the walls find themselves able to see as though a low light was present. Hunters outside the city still do so without such blessing, earning greater renown for large kills under the challenge of night. High Chief Veraquotl rules his people as the strongest of the realm. He has defended the Trial of Might against all claimants for his decade long rule. His temperament is described as cunning and fierce, as expected of a Chosen of Der’Khat. Veraquotl is periodically advised by Elder Pachu, who has lived in Khatlaqta since its creation.
