Dewbough

Dewbough is 50% swamp, 50% jungle, and 100% rancid. The island used to be the home of serpentine races, who either fled- or died- long before roving bands of exiles, explorers, and entrepreneurs arrived. But, being the last major island before hundreds of miles of treacherous ocean before Dragansalar- and the only secular port between Adalon and Raumorthadar- it quickly cropped up as a diverse and important port. The Humans, Elves, Tabaxi, and other adventuring races that settled on the banks of the massive river Nige created a bustling port of exotic trade and declared the massive island under the Commonwealth of Tinore, a united federation of merchants, explorers, settlers, and more looking for a place to make a start- or maybe a place to disappear.   The dense jungle is home to beasts and baddies of all kind. Whether tigers, tree ents, or troglodytes, the trees contain lingering magic and territorial hunters. Stepping off the beaten path gives the player opportunities to gain knowledge from ancient dryads and spirits, or loot Grung villages- but beware, the jungle eyes travelers hungrily, and a step off the path just may be the last step you take.    The marshes alternate between typical swamps and vast open bogs, both dangerously deceiving. Lizardfolk habitate these lands, just as likely to try to eat a wary traveler as they are to provide direction. More likely, in fact. There's also scattered Naga villages, remnants of the Yuan-Ti civilization that once spanned the nation. Many moved to cities, scraping by in slums and shantytowns as they face the constant harassment of the townspeople and try to bring harmony to the chaotic shuffle of the ports; but many more stayed in their original homes, practicing martial arts long since lost and welcoming wanderers with open arms. The marshes were where the serpentine civilization was most prevalent, and there are countless ruins to explore and ancient knowledge to be gained. But the swampland emanates malevolence, and what dies there does not stay dead for long: roving bands of undead wander at night, scouring the grasping vines and deceitful boglands for food. To top it off, the Yuan-Ti worshipped dragons, holding their chromatic cousins in high regard- and its rumored that those they worshipped lasted long after they did.   There isn't a lot of metal, so most weapons, tools, and armor are made of wood, bone, hide, and stone. There is magic that had been absorbed into the ground en masse, with the swamps producing noxious, malevolent magic and the jungle producing more playful, neutral magic. Many people have access to magic in smaller ways, but a powerful magician would be very, very rare: and likely persecuted under suspicion that they had communed with dragons or other evil beings. Much of what remains is tribal or pagan, calling on minor spirits and deities to assist shamanic rituals. These shamans are often held in a mixture of fear and wonder in the cities- they offer invaluable aid, but at what cost? And what happens when they lose control of the spirits they contain?
