Earth
"Earth is the galaxy's mistake." The representative declared, met with various faces of guilt across the chamber. "For decades now, we have operated a policy of no interference with primitives across the galaxy. It was this policy that lead to the deaths of one and a half billion humans and created a humanitarian crisis on a planetary scale."
Geography
The once fairly prosperous and fertile planet of Earth has felt the full effects of nuclear war. While the hidden observation stations were able to disable many of the missiles, most still found their targets. 1.56 billion people died from the detonations and the following fallout and nuclear winter.
Long term affects of the war were mitigated with the aid of various interplanetary states who made contact with humanity shortly afterwards, but there was only so much that could be done. The resulting nuclear winter lead to plummeting temperatures and rainfall, and the ozone layer was all but destroyed. Increased pollution made agriculture impossible in many areas. Terraforming was performed on a small scale. This was limited, however, as the galactic powers managing Earth's recovery weren't prepared to make large investments into it.
In the years following the war, the nuclear fallout has been mostly eradicated, and temperatures began raising again. In spite of this, the northern hemisphere remains the worst affected area, and even the most untouched places can feel the effects of the nuclear winter. The humanitarian crisis created was mostly managed through distributing aid and superior medicine, as well many interplanetary states taking in human refugees afterwards.
Fauna & Flora
Much of Earth's wildlife was salvaged and cataloged before the war, and this has been used by its autonomous government to rebuild lost habitats.
Natural Resources
Earth is mostly devoid of resources useful on the galactic scale. Its main attraction was scientific research performed by observing a primitive species in the latter part of its development. This value was lost when any prospects of development were lost with a nuclear war. In order the mitigate the damage done to humanity, the UIS organised the nation of Seknia to take control and distribute aid, which they did begrudgingly.
