A collection of poems by Cora Barrett
Have I Not Loved Thee by Cora Barrett
Have I not loved the as the stars above
To carry out your wayward wandering wish
And listened to professions of your love
To pine and hope and pray with every breath
And loved you till I was destroyed
To feel my heartbeat falter at your word
As still you smile and have enjoyed
The gift that you have taken left to rot
Have I not followed your command
With silent protest yet I still obey
And pleading how I do not understand
But I am just the victim of your life
And should your leisure cost so much
That you would find your child a worthy price
and others know not that you do such
Shows shame in every effort you employ
So I could live and die at your own hand
And bleed and suffer as you please
Still, I hark at your command
Although I beg and struggle just to breathe
Pray bring me not unto my demise
And let me go in peace unto my grave
That my birth, not bring my mother to despise
The day she brought me forth and gave me life
I Beg For Peace by Cora Barrett
Give me not love, no, let me die
I beg for peace and so I cannot live
Believe me, Lord for I, I cannot lie
To beg is all that I have left to give
Do not despise me for I cannot ask
A kinder favor that my God bestow
I yearn to rest in peace, and yes, to basket
In heavens unerring warmth and gentle glow
Do not release me to the dark beneath
or let me perish for my many sins
for who else can I trust my hearts belief
but whence your blessed grace at last begins
Untitled by Cora Barrett
Have I sinned to love you
Shamed to look on your face
Would I trade this envy
If it saved me from disgrace
Should I keep your secret
Let it lie upon my breast
have I lost my honor
If I take you to my rest
Could you ever love me
If I show myself as true
Will you keep this secret
do I owe my life to you
Will you now betray me
Leave me in the cold
You alone set me free
Should you be so bold
Untitled by Cora Barrett
I come to you my love
Dark the night and cold
With burdens of a broken heart
That loving arms enfold
I come to you on speeded wings
That in the dark take flight
I hope in all our wanderings
Our love will come to light
I come to you with questions
That all will be made plain
That you, my love will set me
free and end my cursed pain
