Christofre the God-killer

Summary

The tale begins with a description of the world as a dangerous place with many dark, cruel gods wondering the world causing trouble for mankind.  In this bleak landscape arises a bright hero.  In the gray town into which he was born, he shines with near divine potential.  A great prophecy is laid upon him and the people hide him from the vengeful gods that he might grow and fulfill his destiny.   The next portion of the tale follows his travels as he visits wisemen, great warriors, and other notable characters in his efforts to learn all that he will need to fulfill the prophecy told over him at his birth.  This portion of the tale contains the most variation.  However, it always contains the story of him receiving the sword Ironblood Defender from Parsefal the Wise and again having a prophecy laid upon him.   The final portion of the tale is his epic battle with the dark gods of the time.  His battles end deep within the forest leaves, where he battled the god of the wind.  Their fight lasted seven days.  Christofre killed the wind god, but was grievously wounded in the battle.   Some versions of the tale include an additional section about Christofre being taken in by a princess of the Moyellians that he might be healed and enjoy his rewards with the Moyellians.  This version usually includes a call for his return in the hour of greatest need.

Historical Basis

When the village of Deepleaf was destroyed by the fae, Christofre of the nearby town of Greytown used the sword, the Ironblood Defender, given him by Parsefal the Wise to protect the people as they escaped from the fae.  While the battle could not be considered a victory, he was able to save many of the villagers.

Spread

This is one of the oldest myths still known.  Due to its great age and that it started as an oral tradition there are a variety of variations of this myth - nearly one for each region.

Cultural Reception

Though this myth is known throughout the world, it is the Morrian, who hold it as their own.  They believe that Christofre was one of the first Morrian and he is held up as the ideal Morrian.

In Literature

As there are a variety of versions of this tale, there are also a variety of books wherein the different versions are written.  The most widely known is the Morrian saga Christofre the God-killer.  The saga is written in stanzas with musical notation and is a staple of Morrian bards.

In Art

Several pieces of art have been inspired by this myth.  Included among that number is a series of paintings by Felys Breen depicting the story, the most famous of which is The Death of a God.  There are also a number of statues of Christofre still being made and sold to this day, but the most famous statue can be found at the castle in Paytondur in the kingdom of Triboci.  The statue, called simple Christofre, shows a Morrian man in noble dress, a prophecy scroll in one hand and a sword in the other, and his right foot resting upon a dead boar.
