Wood
Wood comes from trees of all kinds. Each type of tree that produces wood can be used differently. Some woods like oak are great for constructing lumber for a house, whereas teak is more ornamental and used as decoration.
Properties
Material Characteristics
Wood comes in the forms of trees first, once processed, it then becomes lumber. Trees are cylindrical, having rings that show the age of the tree, and are covered by bark. Other parts of the tree include knots and grooves that make interesting patterns that show more once wood becomes lumber.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Most wood is cool, but some wood can be warmer based on its geographical region. Wood is naturally flammable, in all forms including trees, logs, and lumber. Processed wood is takes a little more time to catch fire, but is flammable nonetheless.
Compounds
Wood is used in multiple ways. It is used to make fire, houses and structures, weapons, containers, toys, and more.
Geology & Geography
Wood is found all over. Different trees produce different strengths and styles of wood. There is no shortage.
History & Usage
History
Wood has always been used throughout the ages, in every part of the world. Not once has wood not been used in the construction of something.
Everyday use
Wood is generally used as fuel and for building.
Industrial Use
Before wood reaches its full crafting potential, it must be processed by a mill, turning it into lumber. Lumber is where wood is best used, as it functions all over.
Refinement
Wood can be used as is, like chopping down a tree and using branches for starting a fire, but it is also used in manufacturing of other products.
Manufacturing & Products
Once processed and turned into lumber, it can be used in multiple ways. Lumber can be used to make furniture, toys, containers, structures, weapons, tools, and more.
Byproducts & Sideproducts
Processed wood usually creates byproducts like sawdust, wood chips, and mulch.
Hazards
Wood can splinter while being processed, which can be dangerous to those not wearing protection. Wood in its raw state is also hazardous when mishandled, like falling trees.
Reusability & Recycling
Wood is completely recyclable.
Distribution
Trade & Market
Wood goes through many stages. Chopping down trees is part one, where a number of people earn money simply for cutting down the trees. When taken to a mill, wood is then turned into lumber, which is part two. Once wood is processed, it can then be distributed to manufacturers to be turned into various products, which is part 3.
Storage
Aside from being natural, wood can be stored in sheds, storage containers, or even warehouses. Transporting wood however takes special train cars that haul the raw material away to where it is needed. These same train cars also take processed wood to manufacturing destinations.
Law & Regulation
While there might not be a shortage of trees in the world, there are some rules about how much deforestation can occur. If the cutting down of trees would harm animal life, then it is prohibited. People usually only cut down what they need, but still require approval before chopping down an entire forest.
A single tree can be sold for $40. Each piece of lumber from a single tree can then be sold for $75.
Wood from trees have unique smells, like a pine tree is vastly different than a birch tree.
Most wood, regardless of type, tastes like pine or pulpy.
Wood comes in various colors, like tans ranging from very light to very dark, reds, orange, and more.
