Eldritch

A subset of sentient creatures from a different plane, who take forms beyond the understanding of the mortal races; the only way they can see these beings is because theirbrains automatically give it a form that one can remotely view. This has made it difficult for researchers to get a grasp on what exactly they were looking at; without the existence of Warlocks, they might have never been able to be researched at all. Gazing upon some of these creatures can drive anyone except a Warlock or Paladin mad: some of these creatures are able to control this affect and only deploy it at will, but some cannot. Some are able to control the minds of the mortal races, and some are capable of extremely realistic illusions. Some even have the ability to shapeshift, making them hard to track for anyone except Warlocks, who are capable of sensing their magical eldritch energies regardless of the shape they take. But even the unexplainable is bound by rules once it crosses over to the mortal plane: these eldritch monstrosities are often at their strongest in their home plane, but lose a part of their power as soon as they cross over into the mortal realm. These rules have often been found out by researchers through trial and error, and have often been employed against them by Paladins and Clerics.   The creatures that Warlocks summon and the pseudo-deities that they communicate with often fall under this category. In dealing with the mortal races, some of these eldritch creatures have even take on a more mundane form such as a cat to avoid upsetting their conversational partner. And contrary to some more conservative people, not every eldritch creature is evil: some truly have no ill intentions with the mortal races, and some even want to actively help them thrive in hopes of one day achieving peace between mortals and eldritch creatures. The King of the Deep is a good example of a good-aligned eldritch pseudo-deity: Ereyar was known to often take on new Warlocks, and was known to take those who were trying to get away from bad patrons in.
