Ridir (Ree-Deer)
The Northern kingdom of Ridir hosts fields of rocky hills, long grass, and light forests. Due to a lack of good agricultural land, the kingdom has a strong economic focus on husbandry and local horticulture. The focus on animals has created a number of unique subspecies of both livestock and domesticated animals, while the abundance of prey has given rise to a wide variety of native predatory species. Ridir’s primary exports are livestock, horses, textiles, and grain for feed.
Tenable, fertile land away from the rivers is rare, and is usually what a settlement is built around, with said soils being used to create gardens or (rarely) small fields of root vegetables and berry bushes. The settlements are dug slightly into the ground, circular, and have a stone wall built around them, with the dug dirt creating a second wall, hiding the first from sight. The centre, or near centre, of settlements house a large stone structure called a broch which was often the only building visible on flat land. Outside of the towns, Hills Grass, a wheat like grain, is encouraged, both to act as a food product, but also as part of a settlement’s defences.
Militarily, Ridir is known for its light cavalry, called the Marach (the riders), its bowmen, known as the Farrach (the watchers), and its light skirmish units, known as The Barrach (the crop). These three forces have developed a strong reputation for disruptive military tactics, including hit and run, ambush, and night raids earning Ridir itself a name for nonstandard warfare. When not in war, the Barrach were primarily farmers, the Farrach were shepherds, and the Marach were nobles and traders.
