Duke/Duchess/NÓRETUR

Title for the ruler of a large regional component of an overall kingdom or a independent region. Men and Women who take this title are known as Dukes or Duchesses respectively while those of a third or nonbinary gender claim the neutral title of Noretur which translates roughly to "Lord" in Elven. Leaders at this level rule over a massive landscape complete with cities and towns each with their own peoples, customs, and feudal leaders and must carefully administer the affairs of the region in accordance with the political, economic, social, and cultural interests of the realm. Failure to do so may result in suffering or even catastrophe... and sometimes such calamity is visited upon reckless Dukes which can even result in the end of their dynastic line.   These Leaders are usually either subordinate to a ruling King or Queen who reigns over multiple Duchies in a Kingdom or are leaders of smaller (but still massive) independent realms and just refuse to claim any sort of royal authority, trusting in the feudalist authority they have rather than the added pageantry of wearing a crown and the heaviness that falls upon such a head.
