The Waystation at Io
One of the main landmarks of Le'Ceil , and a major power center in the area.
Growing off the small island of Io like a malignant growth, the Waystation is famed across the Midlands as a transportation hub. It has become THE place to go to arrange for transport by ship, caravan, covered carriage, and even has the information for sale regarding the best footpaths. In order to serve their diverse and demanding clientele, they hire a multitude of travelers, wanderers, nomads, and vagabonds to provide up-to-date information on the status of roads and trails. This has become difficult as of late, as the lack of Aertan presence in the midlands has seen the roads grow dangerous, towns become isolated, and trade choked behind river blockades. Thus, they will pay at a premium if stalwart adventurers offer to brave some of the more reclusive paths, in the name of updating their ledgers.
Since it's founding, the Waystation has outgrown the cramped confines of Io, and has expanded onto a wide wooden bridge that connects the rocky isle with the mainland. Engineered from washed-up Azon warships, this bridge boasts covered walkways, a wide central plaza, and stairways leading down to sublevels cleverly constructed from the lower decks of the Azon destroyers. Ships often dock alongside the under-bridge, lining it with shops hawking the goods they've transported from all over the world. At the Waystation itself, a small cove of water is surrounded by a rotunda with carved stone steps leading down to it, allowing sailors to row their landing vessels right up to the Waystation before stepping off.
Dominating the central plaza is a large wooden message board, with thousands of papers nailed here and there. Advertisements, messages, notices, bounties, all sorts. They are loosely organized, and only occasionally regulated by Waystation officials.
The main patron of the Waystation during it's construction was the Irwin family, who saw the chance to firmly corner the market on information and transportation in the region. Their investments have paid off manyfold, and now the Waystation is THE transportation hub in the Riverlands.
History
The Waystation started as a gathering place for river traders, a place to moor their ships and share tales about the roads. Eventually, their information became so reliable that travelers began to pay for it. Larger ships mooring nearby eventually formed a bridge from the island all the way to the shore.
Some minor infrastructure completed this convenience, and the sailors who once rested there, drinking under the shade of the trees, now stand behind counters or lounge around wooden tables. Drinks are served, tongues are loosened, plans are made.
