The Protectorate
At the head of the ruling body of Calum stands the Mayor, guildmaster of Guild Calum. As the oldest, largest, and most powerful among the Protectorate guilds, the mayor must be the rock upon which the greatest city on Sableheim stands. Along side the Mayor are the guildleader-representatives of the other Protectors. Their exact number varies, sometimes as few as three or as many as seventeen. Currently, there are seven. The current cast of the Protectorate are a colorful bunch, each with their own razor-focused ambition.
A profile of these seven guilds, and their guildmasters, follows:
Mayor Goldwell
Guild Calum A gregarious, charasmatic, and dangerous goliath. The meteoric rise of the Goliath known only as Mayor Goldwell is a story which perfectly encapsulates the ambitious spirit of Calum. Born a slave in the faraway land of Oarn, he departed the Sunstone Plateau after their Typhon abolished the practice. He made his way to Calum, and took on the name of the dwarf who took him in. Under his adoptive father's tutelage, he became adept in the ways of statecraft, and began to work his way up in Guild Calum, eventually emerging as it's guildleader and Mayor of all Calum. He has become the second Mayor who was not born in Calum, though he has called Breacadh home for nearly 40 years. Though his outward disposition is affable and friendly, one should not underestimate the Mayor. No ordinary sap could hold the Guilds of Calum together.Iazo
The Yeomen Mysterious and powerful Tiefling patriot. Little is known about this scarlet Tiefling's past. He claims to be a "Son of Calum", though whether or not this means he was born in the city is unclear. Whatever his origins, the otherwise conservative Yeomen trust him completely, which speaks more to his character than any biography ever could. He is said to be an intensely powerful spellcaster, gifted in arts both arcane and occult. He has stated numerous times that he believes Port Calum to be the greatest city on all Saheim, and is very vocal in both his praise and criticism for his beloved home. Whether his sentiments are genuine is a question for historians, but it has been demonstrated time and again that he is willing to do just about anything to defend Calums interests and preserve its unique way of life.Thane Ember
Kathrikorns Devout, intense, fundamentalist human soldier. For many years, Thane Ember has been an advocate of military preparedness. Though Calum has never marched off to conquest, they maintain a small professional military, recruited from among the guilds and sworn in service to Master Ember. The Kathrikorn's guildmaster is persistent in his attempts to grow this regiment, but the other Protectors are equally wary of giving the traditionalist human any more power than he already has. Though many are skeptical of Ember's motivations, none can cast doubt on his personal conviction. Thane is an intensely devout man, and he extends this devotion to any practice he is involved in. He worships the goddess Teovas, an aspect of the Tempest dedicated to self-sacrifice and service in the protection of others. While a serious and fiery man such as him is much needed on the Protectorate council, his views on what races should and shouldn't hold positions of power are...troubling in a city as diverse as Calum. Thane is said to always be armed, carrying a blade whose long and storied history dates back to a member of the Sen'Shalla.Shana
Siel Alliance- Half-Orc champion of the common folk. The tough and modest Half-Orc Shana is almost famously likable, her easy smile being considered one of Calum's greatest treasures. She leads a coalition of small guilds, united under the title "The Siel Alliance", their collective weight granting them the strength to just barely hold on to their seat on the Protectorate. Though Shana did not found the alliance (that honor falls to the famous peacemaker Siel Goldwell), she is more than worthy as the inheritor of his will. Some three dozen guilds are represented by the Alliance, and it falls to Shana to hold them together despite immense pressure from larger guilds seeking to usurp her position and make a puppet of the Alliance. Shana bears all this in stride. She is steady to a fault, suspicious of outsiders but fiercely loyal to those who have gained her trust. The respect of the woman simply called Shana is said to be worth more than a guildmaster's ransom.Mistress Lleyna
Duskwatch Elegant elven courtesan turned chief law keeper. A more dramatic turnabout in professions has rarely been seen among the Calum elite than that of "Mistress" Lleyna of the Duskwatch. She made her name as a renowned and highly sought-after lady of the night. Lesser women might have been satisfied being with being the most desired high elf in all of Sableheim, but the Mistress was not. She recruited a group of enforcers to make the city a safer place for her men and women to go about their business. They proved so successful that they found themselves inundated with requests to do the same for other neighborhoods. Soon they were keeping the peace in not just brothels, but entire districts. The story goes that the newly elected Mayor Goldwell personally sought an audience with Mistress Lleyna, urging her to form a guild and replace the current, terribly corrupt police force. She eventually accepted, and the Duskwatch was born. Her ascendance from common citizen, to guildmaster, to Keeper and Protector of the Law took all of fifteen minutes.Ralzel Nouxknith Vervloquath...etc.
No'Felenthriztehkl (Thriz) Proud, professional, nautical-minded Gith exile. A native of the Astral Sea, the illustrious Admiral Ralzel...etc. is perhaps the most alarming individual to hold the title of Protector. Like other gith captains, he took the name of each captain he slew during his time as a marauder in the Transitory Realm, leading to the long and nigh unpronounceable paragraph that he calls a name. After becoming stranded upon the Material Plane, he decided to stay in Calum and establish a guild of sailors. His successful defense of the Barrier Isles during an invasion from an Azon Expeditionary Fleet saw him rocketed to the limelight, and he was soon granted a seat on the Protectorate and charged with Calum's naval defense. He has since brought the majority of the Barrier under his control with his usual reckless determination. Though said to be arrogant and brash, his more...extreme tendencies are tempered by his small team of trusted advisers.Joi-el-Tot and Trunimus Roth
Undertow Easy going, sardonic Mermaid and proud, uptight Triton. An odd pair, but a good team. The Aquatic Territories of Calum compose the Sunken City at the bottom of Brother's Bay, the underwater portion of the Shoals, and the large aquatic plane that extends past the Barrier Isles and into the ocean. Those creatures who live under the waves do not partake fully in the Guild system, opting to instead create a guild to represent them to the overlanders. Joi and Roth are the speakers for these peoples, charged with maintaining fruitful relationships with the land-walkers. Though the two do not see eye to eye on everything, they still make a good team. Rumors of their romantic entanglement (or lack thereof) are popular fodder for court gossip. These rumors are frequently exacerbated by the playful Joi at the expense of the overly uptight Roth. Roth is known as a proud battlefield commander among the Triton. He was reluctant to accept the position of co-guildmaster at first, as he would much prefer to be out battling invaders from the Plane of Water rather than mince words with politicians. Joi was also a warrior, for a time, but gave up on the fighting arts when the opportunity presented itself. Unlike Roth, she enjoys the wordplay of politics, and the luxury of being in a position of leadership.
