Goblin

(See On Player Races)   Goblins are one of the most prolific and least understood races on the face of Sanzeia, broadly speaking they fall into two broad categories:

Wild Goblins

By far the most common way for the civilized races to encounter goblins is in the wild. The diminutive creatures are a constant danger to the unwary traveler, and goblin warrens seem to almost appear out of the air in forests, caves, and swamps throughout the land. Those that interact with these type of goblins often find it best to think of them as mischievous children. While not strictly evil and hostile, they are greedy and violent braggarts that will often flee as soon as things turn against them; flattering and offering a trinket to the largest of the group can often avoid hostilities. What little social structure they have seems to be based entirely on bullying and humiliating the weaker members of the tribe. It should be noted that, according to "goblin experts," goblins rarely intend to kill and prefer to rob and humiliate any victim they can best.

Naming

Though uncivilized goblin tribes vary highly, a common convention among many of them is that names have to be earned by impressing the tribal leader, thus many wild goblins have no name and a limited concept of self. Those few named goblins usually have names that effectively translate to such words as stabber, stealer, cook, guard, etc.

Civilized Goblins

Though quite rare, certain societies, most notably the Bhakh League, have given goblins places to live in their cities. Though still prone to living in warrens and generating significant crime in the surrounding area, these civilized goblins have been shown to be quite clever, inventive, and industrious and those that can put aside some of their baser instincts actually prove very effective in bureaucratic and detail oriented positions that keep their minds occupied. These "city goblins" have caught the attention and favor of the goddess Luciel so much so that her chosen form is that of a female goblin.

Greater Goblinoids

Bugbears

The species known as bugbears seem to be an offshoot of the basic wild goblin with all of its negative traits emphasized. Superficially similar to a very large, furry goblin, it has yet to be determined if they are a separate species or if through some event a goblin might morph into a bugbear. They are indolent bullies who often are seen dominating the smaller goblinoids around them. Bugbears are extremely rare in civilized areas theoretically on the basis that they do not enjoy being in a social structure where they are not at the top.

Hobgoblins

The highly ordered, disciplined, and distinctly leonine hobgoblins have long been referred to as goblinoids. This connection is debated to be more linguistic than biological. One theory states that hobgoblins where the result of the gods infusing goblins with divine order. Hobgoblins, if they possess history/mythology that documents their origins, have not been willing to comment.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Throughout Sanzeia, except on the borders of the Bhakh League (where hostile reactions are political rather than racial), goblins are tolerated, but only just barely, with most assuming they are thieves, spies, or troublemakers -- sadly for the goblins, their species naturally excels in all of the above roles.
