Keeper

The Legends must be told if the old ways are to be remembered.

Prior to the Desolation, the path to becoming a Keeper was far more elaborate than in modern day. Once there were colleges that could be attended and Elder Keepers taught the tales and lessons of old to any that asked. However, interest in the old ways diminished over the years and most of the elders were lost to the changing world.

Now, in lieu of the old colleges, an aspiring Keeper must seek out an apprenticeship from an existing Keeper. While most Keepers are happy to take on a worthy student, they are only allowed two at any given time. To take on more students is to risk not giving them the adequate attention to achieve their goals.

Most of the apprenticeship revolves around acts of kindness and love. Aspirants are expected to spend the majority of their time taking care of their immediate church community as well as their town as a whole. Hours may be spent with ailing widows and orphaned children.

When the Keeper sees fit, they will present their aspirants with their copies of the Legends. Over the next few years aspirants will spend their time hand copying each of the five volumes of Legends. Copies are required to be verbatim and a failure to meet that expectation is seen as blasphemy against the Legends themselves and may result in having to restart from the beginning or lose their apprenticeship.

Once an aspirant has successfully copied all five volumes their Keeper will allow them to begin delivering their own Friday sermons. Once they have delivered ten satisfactory stories to their church, making sure to apply the appropriate flair and drama to their performance, their teacher may bestow the title of Keeper and an aspirant is free to begin their own ministry.
