Passing Day

The Midsummer Holiday of the Ulasian Empire, Shadelands and Southcliffs, Passing Day is the day where the people collect for mourning of those lost in the year before.

History

The Origin of Passing Day came in the ancient times of the Oathbound Kings where clerics of Xulos, god of spirits and the dead, used the light of the longest day in the year to focus their power and shepherd the dead across the veil, should they have remained in the material plane as undead.

Execution

In the modern day, the aforementioned celebrating population eat and make merry, attempting to draw the spirits to them and give them one last night on earth before they pass to the afterlife. In the ancient days, this celebration was used by the clerics to tempt the spirits, fool necromancers into thinking a town was easy prey and force any hiding undead in the shadows into the open.   Thus, the townspeople have developed their own traditions for enticing the dead to come to them and parade with the people into the afterlife.   After celebration and merryment, the town engages in a somber parade at the last light of the day, with the cleric of Xulos at the head if there is one present, if not, someone who the town chooses to guide the lost souls home and the parade ends when all have passed through the archway.   Then there is more celebration and merryment.

Components and tools

Religious Items: A Large Wooden arch is raised to represent the gateway to the Underworld   Secular Items: Town foods (ex: Triagos makes a slow roasted Auroch and Fresh Bread with a Honey Glaze), lights, so many lights, face paint to hide your identity from posession.

Participants

Many people take part in the ceremonies and there are smaller rituals such as the revelation of some sort of effigy of the deceased (sometimes the body is used if it is in well enough condition) and the sacrifice of the Aurochs or Bulls for the feasting. These are handled by butchers and the mortician if a cleric isn't present.   Most important is the role of Shepherd who leads the town through the Archway in the final ritual.
