Nassur

General introduction

Nassur is a city in western Tarrabaenia, which was founded by the Sargotta people. The city, as many in Andaperna, changes hands regularly. As Nassur only had a short phase of consolidation, it is of mainly secular character. Thus in war it gets regularly destroyed, as there are hardly any religious buildings, which would help protect the city's architecture better.

Nassur is thus mainly characterised by living quarters, its market place and its many wells.

History

Sarrinakessar, one leader of the Sargotta people at the beginning of the Era of the Earth, chose the place to found a city for its many springs, as the main religion of his people is the belief in the gods Yek (god of sweet water, wells and springs) and Shil (goddess of the smaller of the two moons). A temple dedicated to those two was built before the city wall was erected, as the peoples of Andaperna show respect to all kinds and manifestations of religion and do not raid religious buildings or damage religious objects. Only a few years later, 233 of the Era of the Earth, construction of the city walls began.

Within the centuries after its founding, the city became target of numerous raids and conquests, which lead to large parts of its buildings getting destroyed and rebuilt over time. In 3118 of the Era of the Earth one siege led to a fire breaking out and destroying the main temple as well. So the current temple, too, is relatively modern.

Role in current culture and tradition

Nassur is a medium sized city, which is mainly known as a place of commerce. Sarrinakessar chose its position only based on deliberations concerning the cult he adhered to, which resulted in it being in a place which, albeit being safe from floods or winds, is not the safest from a tactical point of view. The city lies on a gently sloping hill and is accessible from four sides. Its abundance of water and relatively good soil makes it an interesting strategic position to move troops through. While Nassur is conquered by different people every few dozen or hundred years, its population has developed a kind of stoic, almost nonchalant stance toward this circumstance. It has even gotten a nickname in many Andaperna languages like siggashub (the wall, that quickly falls) or kurunak (fearful city) to make fun of the fact that its inhabitants tend to only lacklustery defend the city when attacked and rather plead for having their lifes spared for not showing too much opposition. The people of Nassur on the other hand of course profit highly from this attitude by saving their lifes.
