Beðs Hrís
General introduction
The name Beðs Hrís refers to the easternmost stretch of the Austara Hrís. The name befittingly means 'coastal forest' and stems from the Skaura Orohlen language Onkara Röddet. The forest is the supposed origin of the Umoyaleyn of the Moiyeli Swamplands, who split off their main group in this very forest, only to wander west and partly extinguish peoples on their way, partly pushing them westward in front of them. Their migration was one of the major causes of ethnic shifts in northeastern Erana during the current era, affecting almost every society in northeastern and central eastern Erana and causing the collapse of the Duiniken Kingdom as well as the establishment of the Tarrabaenian state there.
Sites and features
The Beðs Hrís is a temperate coastal rainforest, that is stretching over a quite rugged and rocky stripe of land along the northeastern coast of Erana. There are hardly any distinctive features in the landscape, since it is relatively flat and despite the luxurious rainfall, much of the water sinks into the ground, so no major rivers form. Along the coastline, there are three larger bays, only one of which, the northernmost one, cuts deep enough into the land to be recognized as one. Around the central part of that coastal forest, the Dreypshváll, a hilly area nestled within the eastern Austara Hrís, forms a visible divide between the Beðs Hrís and the non-rainforest parts of the forest.
Otherwise the forest is characterized by its huge diversity of moss and lichen species. Stems, branches and rocks are all covered in different shades of juicy, blueish or greyish green. It is hard to find any hard edges of angles, as tufts of moss or spongy lichen grow on almist every surface. This lets the Beðs Hrís appear as an almost surreal place, radiating in shades of green, feeling soft and dreamlike.
Role in current history
After the Umoyaleyn population split into two parts, the moving half of it drove the surrounding people forward, with some vanishing in the process and others, like the Skaura Orohlen and the Tarrabaenians moving to different places. The second half of the Umoyaleyn are still believes to inhabit the part of she Beðs Hrís, where it borders the Dreypshváll and up north from there. Not much is known about all of northeastern Erana since the migration period. It is believed, that all peoples living there before have either fallen victim to the Umoyaleyn aggression or have left.
Thus the land is mostly empty and, with no major sedentary cultures known from there from the past, do not even offer much of interest for archeologists.
