Badur Hurasham
General introduction
Badur Hurasham, which means 'The city with the golden walls' in Esemari, the language of the Ur people, is one of the oldest and most revered cities in Andaperna. It sits right on a small plateau on the middle run of the Karet (also known as Karaiz or Nibrukadis), in the very heart of Andaperna. Its position on the plateau right next to fertile land had made it one of the first major settlements to develop and to survive through time. Although Badur Hurasham went through many hands throughout history, it being the home to many of the oldest, biggest and most revered temples and sacrificial areas has often spared it from ransacking and destruction, as all Andaperna peoples share a common pantheon.
The name, while sounding quite pompous and also would be befitting a city of such cultural and religious importance, does not refer to actual gold on the walls. Rather the clay deposits in this particular region fire a bright yellow and the city walls here have, other than in many other cities where stomped earth is used, been build from these bricks.
History and culture
Written history of Badur Hurasham reaches back to the early Era of the Trees. As it was described back then as an already well established town with a market, its foundation probably reaches back even further. Badur Hurasham lies in a naturally well protected location, which is aided by the proximity of the river, providing ample water to the population. As Andapernas history is in parts chaotic and dominated by conflicts between city states and peoples, only few cities survived the ages without major catastrophes likes raiding, pillaging or arson. Badur Hurasham, too, was the target of many sieges and experienced many conquests. Most of those succeded not through blunt force, which would have put the city's integrity in danger, but rather by starving out the population or inducing a pestilence by letting wood and cow dung supplies running low, forcing the habitants to drink unboiled water which in turn caused people to contract Sharkuwantayas Tuhhimas. This was mainly due to only a small part of the city wall being exposed enough to be subjected to siege engines. While hunger and pestilence often swept away the population only to be replaced by the victors, the city and its buildings stood strong throughout the centuries.
Badur Hurasham is well known for its number of old temples, sacrificial areas, palace buildings, gardens and wide variety of housing. The architectural setup and diversity makes Badur Hurasham the most vibrant and varied city in Andaperna as well as the culturally richest, even though some newer cities have surpassed its population.
Role in current history and relationship to other cities
Having so many temples, it is the city with the most religious festivities. The temples themselves as well as the festivals are attracting many pilgrims to the city. It is by this virtue also a place of great tolerance and ethnic diversity, because pretty much every people of Andaperna was in control of the city at one point in time and left its mark on the architectural landscape. This of cause draws other things to the city as well. Nowhere in Andaperna are more languages spoken and more different dishes served than here. The city has acquired some kind of special status for some time and while it is still a city state among others with ambitious strong Men driving its fate, whenever it has changed hands in die past three hundred years, conquerors tried even more to not use force to enter the city. This unwritten and unspoken rule shows all Andapernas peoples' reverence to the place.
